ASUS R.O.G. Maximus II Formula (Intel P45) pictures

i'm getting fed up with all these silly chucks of metal glued to asus boards. all that crap around the CPU socket will surely not be good for airflow?

why is the heatsink so large around the southbridge, thats the thing that i dont get as that doesnt get hot???

btw that xfi sound card isnt on ocuk or competitors, wouldnt mind knowing the specs.

If they use the same epoxy stuff they used on the X38 boards then it will be a nightmare. I had that problem with my P5E.

easy as pie if you used a hairdryer before using the board, a bit harder to remove the goop if the board has been used for a bit.

this board looks over the top, especially the southbridge heatsink ...wtf are they thinking?

The Gigabyte P45 DQ6 has an extra 3rd party PCI lane chip beside the southbridge, so that probably explains why this ASUS has a big heatsink there too.

Think it's a bespoke job for the ROG boards, I got one with my Striker II Extreme. Not sure of spec, but for all the shielding on it, it still picked up a lot of RF noise (though I dare say the Tuniq Tower inches from it, might work as something of an antenna broadcasting CPU noise). Also, the drivers for it seem to disappear at some point on every install....it's possibly when openAL gets installed by a game, but it still works through the proper windows mixer anyway.

I might try it in my Linux box actually, because ALSA has some very funny ideas about the onboard sound on the M2N32wspro.

I just tried the one from my Striker II extreme in my M2N board.........no dice. Board doesn't recognise or init the card at all. Neither windows nor linux can see any new devices.

So it's either tied to the board, or only works in the top PCIe slot (which I can't really get at as it's wedged between the 8600gt and the asus silent knight II),
