modeo ST TDCI - MPG?

Mate has an ST TDCi, and a very nice drive it is too.

No idea what he gets mpg wise, although I would guess at 40+.

At that price bracket, also take a look at Vectra turbo diesels.

The 1.9 CDTi is an absolute stormer of an engine with great mpg. Some folk on the Vec-C forums I know of have had it up to over 200bhp with a tuning box or remap and still get 40-50mpg.

I own a 2004 Vectra C 3.0V6 CDTi SRi.

Great performance, with a DTUK tuning box on it, nice sound from the V6 and I still manage around the 40mpg mark during normal driving.

A proper ST220 perhaps? Or are you limited to Diesel for some obscure reason?

Limited to Diesel for an obscure reason?

That's an odd comment to make.

A couple of unobscure reasons spring to mind such as better fuel economy and lower tax rates.

It was a slightly wierd way to put it - but I'd still spend 6k on an ST220 and save 4k for fuel. :D

And relax about the lovely TDCI's injectors

Ye but the cost differences between running a petrol and diesel are becoming less with the increasing cost of diesel relative to petrol as well as the fact if you do small miles buying a diesel wont be that much benefit as it costs more to service/fix and petrol is only a small bit extra per month. Plus the fact you dont have to drive a tractor :D

BTW in answer to your question op something around 42 seems to be about average on the st forums.

Make an ST220 make perfect sence. Well done, you save a hundred quid or so a year in tax, yet spend 20p a litre more on fuel, 4k more on the car and end up with a fake ST with a Diesel engine...

I dont understand why you have limited yourself to diesel and removed the possibly of so many decent petrol cars!

i think your figures are ever so slightely out! I've just priced up an 06 st tdci for £9k ish. find me an 06 st220 for £5k!

Also, when i'm driving 15k plus a year and paying around £200ish a month on petrol each month and could be paying around £70 less, to me thats a considerable lump?!

i'm not going to go for a 220 and increase my fuel bill by another £50 a month as well as extra road tax and insurance as in the current climate, it would be financial suicide!

Ask a simple question, get chastised by perol heads!

48mpg and you're only driving 15000 miles thats crazyness.

only?

going from my current CTR which does 30mpg if you drive like an old woman costs me £46 a fill up which gives me around 260-270 miles.

a good diesel would get me 500 miles from a £55 fill up. I'd reduce my insurance by around £200 a year and reduce the tax by around £100-£200 depending on the rate increases over the next couple of years.

you may be able to afford to run a 3 litre car which would struggle to get 28 mpg for 1200 miles a month......some can't!

A cursory look on ebay does make it seem as if 06 ST220s and TDCIs are about the same price. If so, and at 9k, get the diesel.

It's not the same as other diesel v petrol arguements.

The ST TDCi is not equivilent to the ST220 - it only looks like one. It is CONSIDERABLY slower.

It's like comparing a 330i with a 320d. You wouldn't.

It's a Mondeo, dont spend £10k on one, get a tidy 02/03 ST220 for £6k and spend £3k on fuel and have a big grin. It's by far the better option. The ST220 is a sports saloon, the ST TDCi is a diesel motorway muncher with a party frock.

Agreed, pretty much.

But the ST TDCi's drive pretty well with a Bluefin on. :p

And I know you don't like Vectra's, Fox, but it's pretty much the same as far as they go too. CDTi 1.9's are surprisilngly quick and tractable with a remap or tuning box, as are the 3.0 V6's like mine.

That said, I see the point about petrol prices>>>running costs.

I've been looking at Vectra VXR's as my next car recently ( or a 5 series, older Alpina ) as the cost of diesel and the mileage I and the missus do doesn't really warrant the advantages of owning and running a DERV.

If you do a fair bit of motorway work and keep it below 80mph, you'll get 48MPG. Driven a bit more spiritedly you'll see low to mid 40's. I never got less than 40mpg from a tank in mine.

The 2.2's have a stronger clutch and flywheel so don't suffer with problems in this area. They can have problems with injectors but they are likely to have been fixed under warranty where necessary.

The ST220 is a fair bit quicker at full but will use about 50% more fuel than the TDCi and falls into the top tax bracket, but then you asked about diesel hatchbacks so that won't be of interest :).
