I have been offered an 7950GX2 for free, as my mate is buying a new card. There is only one slight issue as a capacitor has broken off, and will need soldering back on. Hopefully this won't affect the card working?

I am going to give this card to new nephew, but wanted to know if the GX2 is going to be better than the card he is running with now. Its an Ati X1950XT.

Will he be better off with the GX2, or staying put with what he has got now???

The GX2 will be far better than the X1950XT if the game you are playing works well with SLI...otherwise the X1950 will be faster.

As far as the capacitor, you will need to replace it. I would not recommend just shorting it. Do you know which capacitor in particular?

I am not getting the card till later on this weekend. As soon as I get the card I'll let you know. :)

If its a good GX2 each core will overclock to almost 7900GTX speeds (tho not so close on the memory)... so in theory even when SLI isn't supported it would be fairly close to the 1950... when SLI is supported properly i.e. in most modern games it will be far faster than a single 1950. In all but the most shader heavy games it will be around 8800GTS (G80) performance.

I would argue that the G80 is a lot faster than a 7950GX2.

I upgraded from the GX2 to a 8800GTS and the speed bump was significant.

Well mine was OC'd to 7900GTX SLI speeds - but in 3D Marks 06 and most games it was either faster than the 8800GTS 640Mb or very very slightly behind - in ETQW its over 35% faster, in BioShock pretty much neck and neck and only crysis is the 8800GTS (G80) significantly faster.

7950GX2 to 8800GT was a reasonable speed bump.
