All New Summer 2008 Transfer Merry Go Round/Rumour Mill

Doubt there is any truth in it but if there is, it may tempt the owners but i'd be suprised if Torres would make the move.

Also shouldn't this be in the transfers thread.

never made that claim at all. in fact i think you've been the one to mention your players establishing themselves as world class over the course of this season in this thread?
Regardless VDS is clearly a very good keeper who deserves a lot of credit for the work he has put in for us. there are keepers i rate above him but not loads.

the lol was mainly just me thinking about the quote 'it's odd that the harder i practise the luckier i seem to get.' and how it's those who lost that talk about 'luck'.

*edit it was pigeon killer talking about Masch being world class not you.

I would say its now like 50/50 proberly more in the favour marketing then skill. Ronaldo is good but im sure im not the only one (i have seen others on here say) he isnt a big game player. Hes fluffed two (1 almost game blowing) penalties, he doesnt seem to turn upto big games and gets cut out (against barca and chelsea 2nd half). Football is a business and the name alone makes them money so 50 or 100m is OTT but its what the name brings that gives them such high prices imo.

Nah it was just a jab at some of the comments I've read on here from United fans over the last few weeks.

VDS is a decent keeper, but I don't think I've ever seen one player get away with so many spilt shots, fumbled crosses etc.

So now he HAS scored in a Champions League final (and it was a fantastic goal) as well as scoring against Lyon, Roma, AC Milan, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool, Everton and he's still not a big game player?

He's scored goals in the last, decisive match of a Premier League season, in the Carling Cup final, in the FA Cup Final AND in the Champions League final and he isn't a big game player?

People who say that are so full of **** that it's now becoming nothing short of a joke.

If Cech went the other way it was a great penalty. He didn't MISS it, it was SAVED. Big difference. The one against Barcelona wasn't great, but it also wasn't that far away.

he doesnt seem to turn upto big games and gets cut out (against barca and chelsea 2nd half).
He was isolated up front on his own against Barcelona and doubled up on against Chelsea, however people don't mention just how many defensive headers he made against Barcelona from set pieces. People should watch that again and they'd be in awe, he was fantastic defensively in that match.

If I was a Don I'd ban the next person who says he doesn't turn up for the big games due to idiocy. :p.

I agree with him, if you'd have replaced Ronaldo in our side with Torres I don't think we would have won a single competition let alone the double.

So Utd are a 1 man team :D ;)

Anyway that wouldn't have been the test to Nokkon's statement. You'd need to put 3 Torres' in your side.

Nokkon do you think Ronaldo has ever put a world class performance against a top side? If so, when?

I agree with this kind of, Ronaldo turns up for big games but he never looks head and shoulders above the oppositions contrast this to Ronaldinho at his prime (see Real Madrid game) and to a lesser extent Messi.

Roma. Roma. Sporting Lisbon. Arsenal. Lyon.

I also thought he was excellent against Chelsea (he did get Man of the Match) in the Champions League final.

Oh and then there are his performances for Portugal in the World Cup 2006 and Euro 2004. Portugal were flying in the World Cup til Bouhlarouz kicked him out the tournament.

:D

As much as I think Torres is a superb player who has had an immense season, in terms of comparing him to Ronaldo, he has a long long way to go before hes even close to Ronaldos level

Doesn't really tell the whole story though, Shearer hardly won any awards in his career (i.e no European Cup) does that make him worse than Sheringham, Solksjaer etc.?

Edit- Man U fans don't bother trying to say either of those two are better than Shearer because...well... it just ain't true is it.

Take the top two off then. Still not close.

I'm not sure anyone's debating C Ronaldo had a better season, but 3x better with the justification being a list of awards 3 of which Torres couldn't win to start with, 2 others that are team efforts and the others Torres was in the running for suggests Ronaldo is 3x the player Torres is?
