Best guitar solo of all time?

I don't suppose you could count any Vai, Satriani or similar?

Seeing as the songs are 1 big solo.. nevertheless I'd say "Whispering a Prayer" by Steve Vai.. just the way the song gradually builds over the course of track. It's a real gem, live.

I love the way the solo just bursts in on Whole Lotta Love by Zeppelin. Gives me a chill every time.

Obviously Stairway to Heaven needs a mentioned when you speak of Zeppelin. It's so gloriously refined and restrained.

No doubt its an absolute sinch for guitarists to play, but im no guitarist and i just like how clean it sounds.

I like the fast bit about 5 mins into Dire Straits - Sultans of Swing :)

Eddie Van Halen playing on Beat It is pretty good as well, apparantly he did it one take, no rehearsals which makes it even more impressive to me.

He doesn't get anywhere near enough credit these days. Probably more of an influence to guitarists of today than Page/Hendrix are.

Incidentally, I think his Jump solo is one of his best ever, and I also love the Panama solo.

Other solo's I love:

Nuno - Get the Funk Out and Heman Woman Hater (no, not bumblebee the solo in the song!)
Marty Friedman - Ashes in your Mouth and Train of Consequences
Hendrix - All Along the Watchtower
Kirk Hammet - Master of Puppets or The Struggle Within
John Pettruci - The Dance of Eternity
Zakk Wilde - The solo in Helpless on the Dweezil Zappa album Confessions
Slash - Estranged
Tom Morello - Settle For Nothing
Mike McReady - Alive
And so many by Satriani and Vai, but they are more whole songs than solos!

Pick one? Bah, impossible!

Best guitar solo of all time is impossible.

However...

Here's an old favourite of mine. The choice from EC's live catalog is almost never-ending... this one is a slow build to a simmer to a full on boil :D
Andy Fairweather-Low on vocals.

There are a million more I could choose.

Ooh. Thought of another I love. Not really very shreddy, which is a surprise from this guy..

Van Halen - Black and Blue
A version here:
although this isn't as good as the studio version.

John Squire - I Am The Resurrection - Stone Roses

Might not be the most technical? I'm not sure, I can't pay the guitar.

Either way, it's still my favourite.
