I think thats harsh. I don't recall seeing Tevez being asked to become a winger every other game like Rooney often is.
His season hasn't been good, it's been interrupted by injury a lot and he has played in his best position very infrequently but I would still have him over Tevez to partner Torres. On paper they could be a dream partnership. Certainly I would see him getting more out of torres than Tevez.
I think that's an excuse born out of convenience I'm afraid, it's one I hear often, but even at Everton Rooney played coming off the wing and he has done it 4 years at Man Utd now. It seems the foot injuries have had a massive impact not only on his progress, but also his ability and confidence.
If Rooney got his confidence sorted he'd be amazing, but he isn't the head down have a go hero he once was, he now backs out of tackles, doesn't shoot anywhere close to what he should and his passing ability and clever dinks aren't in the league required if you're gonna pull shots all the time.
Rooney of two years ago was streets ahead of the Rooney now, nothing has changed bar his confidence and several broken feet.
Tevez on the other hand gets stuck in and holds the ball as well as anyone in the Premier League, he doesn't lose his head like Rooney, he helps the team just as much in midfield, possibly more, he's a better short passer and he has more energy to get up and around when everyone else is tiring.
Rooney playing well gets in ahead of Tevez, but Tevez aside from scoring more goals in the EPL, is actually just a hell of a lot more consistent. Some of Rooneys performances this season have been diabolical, not just for the Premier League or Europe, but at any level, he just doesn't turn up and his Champions League final was perhaps the crowning jewel of his bad season.
Hopefully with a long summer of recovery, without a major tournament or any injury he can come back a real force, it's what I'm hoping for, hell, it's what I expect any Man Utd player worth their salt to do, and I really hope that's the case.
