films inspired by games

Resident evils liked all of them
silent hill is ok
doom started good then just went downhill till the last 30 seconds of the first person camera view (wished they more of that)
tomb raider is ok with good visuals basically female indiana jones
hitman wasnt a total disaster but the story could have been abit deeper
Dead or alive is ok visually stunning but wouldnt go too far out my way to watch it again.
AvP was good once the action kicked in hated avpr
Dont remember watching any of the others mentioned

Most game adaptations are pure balls imo, a 2hour film can't contain the depth of story that comes from 14+ hours of gaming.

However i would like to see a film adaptation of max payne (although it would be balls also). It would be a humor watch

The film is coming out in october - has Mark Wahlberg as Max Payne and nelly furtado is in it so should get some publicity.

(I should really get off wikipedia!)

I would say that most game adaptations are rubbish because the inspiration that they are drawing from generally doesn't have all that much depth. For the vast majority of games those 14 hours are spent doing pretty much the same thing. Games with really good stories are far and few between.

You could say the same for movies too RDM.

Without a doubt, far too many films also lack depth. But the problem is much worse for games especially as the vast majority of them lack any real interaction between characters. Even more serious is the fact that in a huge number of games the main character is nameless, characterless and dialogueless because you play them. The odd one liner in a cut scene is your limit.

Games in general are poor inspiration and so tend to make poor movies.

Very true - most games have pretty awful or non-existant stories - the 14 hours or so shooting things doesnt have much storyline content other than cut-scenes, which are generally poorly done anyhow. I'm surprised the Tomb Raider film didn't have more of Lara Croft trying and failing to do something repeatedly whilst saying "No".

films based on games are no worse than the majority of films based on books.

Going to have to disagree with you there. At least most books that sell enough to be made in to films actually have things like plot, dialogue and character. While the film making process may mangle it, it certainly has more to go on from the start. Plenty of excellent films have come out based on books you would be hard pressed to say the same about games.

yeah most games do :( i loved Knights of the old republic stories though :D i haven't played a game since then that i would consider to have a better story than the two games

thats why I said the majority :p

The problem with game to film conversions is that none of the good games have really been turned into films. The only really big name game thats been turned into a film was Resident evil and thats good. Stuff like DOA and Doom were obviously never going to make good films because theres no plot in the games! Stuff like Halo, Half Life, The Darkness could actually make good films because they're heavily plot driven.

The book vs game thing is settled for me when I think of the Bourne trilogy. Easily my favourite trilogy ever made, which came from a set of books. I've yet to find a film that's based on a game even come close to being memorable. I really enjoyed Hitman (I think it was because I tried to totally detach it from the game). The same goes for Aliens Vs Predator. But neither will ever be a 'great' films in my eyes. But in terms of enjoyment, I had a great time watching them. Whereas the Bourne Ultimatum is my favourite film. Obviously it also comes down to cast, director etc. But when there's a film out, based on a game that rivals the Bourne Identity, then I'll be excited.

You didn't even find The Godfather memorable? Bridge on the River Kwai? A Clockwork Orange? Silence of the Lambs? Gone with the Wind? Schindler's List? Planet of the Apes? Psycho? Jurassic Park? One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest? Shawshank Redemption?

There's been a lot of memorable book to movie adaptations IMO, far more than just those.

Whoops. :p

Look out for the edit I'm about to make. ;)

EDIT: Loads of films that have come from books have been memorable for me. All bar three from your list, are very memorable to me. I wrote book when I meant game. :p

I think the Bioshock movie has a lot of potential. Good director, screen writer and source material.
