Anyone disappointed by the lack of large external HD enclosures (4 drives+)

If you need space for eight drives you are best off getting a larger case and mounting them internally, every other way of doing it is expensive, both in terms of the case, cabling and controller card, but also in terms of the ongoing power usage.

I would look at rebuilding your main machine if you need to access the storage all the time, or building a low spec celeron or sempron Windows Home Server machine. The case below may be of interest

NAS are ok for storage, however they're not ok for doing work on (ie editing a photochop picture from). The network latency etc and transfer rate usually mean a FW-800 or eSATA connection.

I was looking for something like the IcyDock recently but decided that a single drive MyBook Studio would suffice.
If I'm going to be doing heavy work then I plug in and use. If I'm doing light work/browsing etc then I don't have to have anything plugged in..

Anymore and I start asking myself - would a proper desktop machine be more suited to the task.

I have 2 4bay external enclosures, they have a raid option built into the case which means you can unplug from one machine, plug into another and still is in the raid config.
also if im not using one or both i can switch them off to save power

I can find quite a few NAS boxes that take 4 drives but there are £300-500 just for the shell. I'm looking at spending £100-130.

I know you don;t want another PC, but:
Asus Vintage V2-M2V890 Barebones System - AMD64 (Socket AM2) - £62.26
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4200+ 2.20GHz (Socket AM2) - Retail - £41.11
Crucial 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2 PC2-5300C5 Dual Channel Kit (CT2KIT12864AA667) - £28.19

£131.56 + p&p
Hook up the CD/DVD drive from your existing system to install Linux. The case itself can take 3x3.5 drives with no addition. It can easily be modded to take upto 8 (or more) 3.5" drives.

Drobo is meant to be good. Geekbrief.tv is always recommending it.

Drobo is expensive >£300 for a bare unit (USB). Add ~£150 for a network interface.
