Am looking to invest in a pool table to play at home, it's something I've always wanted and with some building work we're doing, space isn't so much of an issue anymore!

Obviously, I'm gonna give this a good google, but I thought I'd post here first to see if anyone has any experience with buying a pool table for home use. Would appreciate any suggestions/comments on type and size, and maybe a recommended supplier. Is going for a refurbished model a good idea to keep the cost down? What sort of size room would I be looking at? I'm a tall guy so would appreciate being able to use long cues.

Cheers,

Yeah we have one...

Go for a proper slate- based one- don't mess around with anything inferior.

Our room is about 14x12 ft and it's only just big enough TBH... Will go get some details on it for you later...

Cousins bought a reconditioned 7' slate one recently. Most of these have been in smoking environments so expect a fag burn mark or two and a few chips on the woodwork. If you get a chance, see it first and make sure the cushions and cloth are OK as these often need replacing on second hand ones or have sometimes been replaced by rubbish ones with reconditioned tables. Also check the slate is perfect if you can. They paid around £450 including delivery and installation with new blue cloth (blue cloth>green IMO!).

If you'd like to know the company they bought from, let me know and i'll ask them.

Cheers guys. I'll definitely get a proper one; want it to last for a while. I don't mind slight blemishes but obviously I want it to play 'as new'. The impression I get from this company is that they keep the frame and re-do everything else, and £450 doesn't sound unreasonable to me - seems to fit with the price you suggested JoeMama

Would be good to know what company they used if it's not much trouble, thanks!

sorry for a late reply

yeah as said you want a slate based table and you don't want to go for speed cloth (basically has no nap on it), as they are awful to play on.

you may want to take a look at this website uk8ball

Hope this helps

Thanks for the UK8ball link. I'm by no means a skillful player, it's just something I've always wanted to have the option to play on a regular basis. I'm thinking very much along the lines of pub pool, as I've never played on an American table. Will keep in mind what you've said about the slate base / speed cloth. Don't mind heavy, as long as it can be delivered - it's going in a downstairs room that's being purposely built, and I can't see it moving any time soon!

My uncle has a pool table for sale , but tbh its a pub table & is freeking huge :P & is located in Wales

To be honest, it *is* going to be for messing around, if I get good, it'll only be through spending most of my spare time on it! The link I gave earlier suggests 4.5x3.7m room dimensions for decent cueing - for a 6x3 table - which is big enough already! Might be able to stretch that to a 7x4 table but will have to check on availability, and wall measurements :P
