right i have 400 pounds to spend, i can either build a file server to host files on my network and a cod 4 game or i can get the new eee pc 900 with 20 gig ssd and 1 gig of ram. i would use the eee pc at friends houses aswell as in the car and at school. is it worth it? should i get the eee pc 900?

Does it have a SSD?
80 GB regular HDD, apparently replaceable with any size you see fit. Some people would prefer the shock-proof SSD of the EEE though of course.
The Wind is compatible with SSD and it would just be a case of removing the HD and replacing with a SSD.
The Wind is a better machine than the EEE but it might be worth waiting to see what Dell bring to the table, I would say unless you need a UMPC now, wait as competition is gonna start heating up as more come to the market specs will increase and prices will fall.
Thought they were both £329? For which you get (with the Wind vs the 900) 4x the storage, a bigger screen, a nearly full size keyboard and better battery life, plus the screen isn't shiny so you can use it outdoors.
Still I'm gonna wait for specs/pricing on the Dell. As pumaz says prices will drop as more of these UMPCs arrive on the market and competition hots up.

Reading your original post, we can't decide for you between 2 different things. It's down to whatever you feel you need/want more.
However, judging from your replies, it looks like you want an Eee PC. I'd ask in the Eee thread about it specifically. With regards to other umpcs, weigh up whether they're more suited to your needs, only you know those

The 900 seems to be crippled by short battery life. Unlike the 701 it runs the full 900 Mhz the whole time, plus the UK ones have a lower rated battery, and I think I saw someone say his only lasts an hour 
(see the big EEE thread, it's in there) Of course you can get round this by using a third party app to clock the CPU back to the 630 MHz the 700/701 uses in which case the battery lasts about 2.5 hrs. Or you can just buy a higher capacity battery for it.
The 901 with the atom will use less power and I'm assuming it will have speedstep so the CPU will automatically clock down under light use, but the prices I've seen quoted for the 901 are too much IMO (over £400). So you're left with the Wind (due late this month IIRC) which has the atom and will be 900 price (£329), but of course it is a little bigger and ~350g heavier. And you have a UMPC on the way from Dell and they're usually good value.

i am in the same boat tbh so am giving it a month for next paycheck lol this gives the time for all the reviews to be out as i think the ONE is out on the 10th and the wind soon after that so i am going to see what the word is after there out there also i can go to pc world and have a play lol
i really want to get an eeepc sent my latop off to be repaired and was hoping that they couldnt repair it as the gfx chip had gone so needs a new mobo and its about 3 years old, sent it off and nothing for 2 weeks so i rang them but they said they need to replace the mobo (like i told them 
) but are waiting for one to come in 
dammit!!! was really hoping they would be like nah sorry cant fix it, insurance pay out and get me an eeepc, guess ill just have to sell it to get one

Get the EEE. Its so amazing! I upgraded my black linux version to have 2gig ram and it makes a massive difference. Stick in a 16 gig class 6 SD card and you have a seriously nice machine. what does it for me is the size of the eee. I can comfortably hold in in one hand and type with the other. I also purchased an upgraded Mugen 7800mAh battery which lasts for almost 5 hours watching movies and browsing the internet.
The single best thing for me is the community that the eee has, which means there are so many mods and hacks that mean that you can always get the most out of it. There are loads of program that alter the clock speed in the same way as the MSI Wind's turbo button does.
