All New Summer 2008 Transfer Merry Go Round/Rumour Mill

Ronaldo should stay to win a bit more, hes still young, and if he goes he'll win in Spain and then do nothing else imo.

He should stay for atleast another couple of seasons.

All he's doing is pushing up his wages. He came out with the I'm staying after winning the final which probably had his agent slapping his head.

Now he's playing it cool til he gets his 150k per week. Its all just ego he wants to be by far the highest paid player.

At the end of the day it's up to united whether he stays or goes not him. One day, i'd really love to see a club take a stand and bench such a player like they threaten for the remaining 3 years of a contract.

I'd love to see him in the stands for 4 years.

If he stays next year he will be pulling the same stunt.

If I was a Man Utd fan I would be sick. Ronaldo has absolutely no loyalty to the manager and club that arguably made him what he is today, the best player in the world.

He should take a look at players like Giggs and Scholes (who fair enough I don't rate at all now), but have been top players in their respective positions and some point or another. There's no doubt over the years Real and other big clubs could have come in for them but they never fed the speculation and were always 100% committed to Man Utd.

Back to Ronaldo, I think he will go. He could have put this whole saga to bed weeks and weeks ago by simply saying that he is going no where. As the position is at this moment in time, I would take the ridiculous amount of money it will actually take to sign Ronaldo and run a mile.

There's no point keeping him at the club to sit him in the stands. Fair enough he is irreplaceable, but the £70-100M or whatever the figure would be could probably enable the club to actually move forward in other positions and become better on the whole as a team.

I know, i'm quite disappointed in Ronaldo. Hopefully when he does go he'll be a spectacular flop.

Don't see how he'll flop though. I'm not one for the whole 'Premiership is bestest league in the world!!111' crap, but the Premiership is a superior league to La Liga and Ronaldo will find it a breeze probably. I wouldn't be surprised if he scored 50 goals in a season there.

Will be interesting to see if the opinions of Man U fans change at all if he leaves.

Lets just hope we can get him on a good deal (Wishful thinking I know)

Anyone but Bentley

If the rumours are right, we're actually looking to sign both of them and if the suggested £8.5m for Bentley is correct, we could do a hell of a lot worse.

Alonso + Riise Out = £23m
Quaresma + Bentley In = £23.5m

Not bad business....

I don't think for one minute that he'll flop but to say that Ronaldo will find it a breeze and will score 50 goals a season there is a bit ott. Our top 4 is certainly better than Spains but the rest of their league is at least a match for ours.

Anyway that's not really relevant. Take Torres for example, he looks a different player over here than he was in Spain and although that's partly down to playing with better players, a lot also has to do with the way in which teams play over here. The game over here in general is far more open than it is in Spain and the likes of Torres, Ronaldo etc take advantage of these open areas. In Spain there will be far less space for Ronaldo to play in and it's no secret that Ronaldo is less effective against better sides who are tighter at the back.

You mean like Torres found it so easy?

EDIT: Just read Baz's reply...

Alonso + Riise Out = £23m
Quaresma + Bentley In = £23.5m

.

I think you are dreaming in both respects

Alonso will go for £15m max, and Riise will only be a few million

Quaresma will be over £15m and Bentley (because they dont have to sell and the British inflation) will be about the same mark - so more like £30m for both

Im not saying you cant raise the £30m but it will probably include Crouch sale - albeit maybe with a few million left over

edit

If Ronaldo goes, I personally will see it as a bit of a betrayal - I think he owes the team after club stood by him after WC.
We bought players from Portugal to make him feel more at home (No doubt we would have been interested in both, but Im not convinced we would have purchased Nani last summer if Ronaldo hadnt been in the team)

I hope he stays, but I can also see goals coming from more players if he goes (the fact he has been so good has meant that other players have possibly relied too much on Honny scoring)

Torres did very well at Atletico, considering the standard of team he was in.

It's all very well picking out one single example, but then I can easily counter it. Morientes?

Bentley won't be going on the left wing though :p.

I know, but I cant see us signing 2 wingers really.
Gerrard or Babel would be on the left accomodating for Bentley on the right no doubt, both of those can play on the right if we had an Ashley Young.
Iv yet to see any decent evidence that we would sign quaresma, hes just one of those names that gets thrown about quite often nowadays for us.
Hes alright, but hes going to be a risk and even then I dont know if he would be any good. I dont really rate him.

Im only going off the rumoured figures, whether they materialise, who knows.

I suspect Blackburn will bump up the price too because I suspect there is a sell on clause. Generally it's between 10-25% (sometimes 50%) when young players leave Arsenal (might be a buy back too)

You need two wingers though. Isn't that the issue?
One on the right, one on the left? Torres upfront with Babel behind?

Sounds good to me?

I didn't say it was easier here than Spain but that it depends on the player in question. Like i said Ronaldo benefits from the style of play that a lot of English sides play as has Torres. In Spain Torres hardly set the world alight because teams didn't offer him the space to play in with the exception of Barcalona who he had a great record against.

Morientes is the complete opposite. The amount of space given to him to run into made no difference because that wasn't his game. He on the other hand thrived on balls into the box.

Can't agree I'm afraid, he owes us nothing. He's given us 5 good years, the last 2 being phenomenal. He's pretty much the sole reason we've won 2 EPL titles and a CL title in that time.

We bought players from Portugal to make him feel more at home (No doubt we would have been interested in both, but Im not convinced we would have purchased Nani last summer if Ronaldo hadnt been in the team)
I thought we bought them because they were players with cracking potential! You don't splash near enough £40m on 2 players to keep Ronaldo happy.

I hope he stays, but I can also see goals coming from more players if he goes (the fact he has been so good has meant that other players have possibly relied too much on Honny scoring)
I still think he will stay. :).

Not sure about Babel playing too central. Even games where he played up top he naturally drifted out to the left. I'd like to see us play more of a 4-3-3 (rather than a 4-2-3-1) with him on the left and a similar style player on the right.
