The Mass Effect (PC) Discussion Thread

Any comments on the copy protection. Already have this on the 360 so if it's still got something nasty on it i will be happy to boycott it.

Seems to have reliable people releasing it illegally.
Any more comments would be illegal to say on these forums I think.

Hmmm an RPG, I'm always having a hard time getting into rpg's, is it properly guided with a story do I don't get lost what to do/go for ?

From Bioware :

" Mass Effect uses SecuROM and requires an online activation for the first time that you play it. Each copy of Mass Effect comes with a CD Key which is used for this activation and for registration here at the BioWare Community. Mass Effect does not require the DVD to be in the drive in order to play, it is only for installation. "

bah - mine has only just now been dispatched

oh well, maybe get it on Monday then...

Thats why I didn't bother ordering from the river shop as their despatch times seem to be all over the place. I want it so badly for the weekend and I don't mind paying a bit more buying it from the high street to get it.

I'm looking at getting this as I had it on the 360 and I couldn't stand the performance issues.

Problem is I have a P4 3.2Ghz, 2Gb of RAM and a Nvidia 7800GT, which is more than the minimum spec but quite old. Any guesses on how well that would perform?

I was going to boycott it when the original copy protection scheme required you to re-activate your copy every ten days, but they removed this and now it only needs activating once. Oddly it's not asked me to activate mine yet, I wonder if the activation server isn't up yet or if it activates silently.

i thought it was an fps rpg? fps fun plus great story and rpg elements?
While it has a heavy action/fps element, I would say it's way more of an RPG than an FPS. You will rely a lot on special abilities and powers during combat, which pause the action briefly as you select them, so it's not in the slightest bit "run and gun" like the typical FPS game.

That doesn't work for all of them, just for some of the dialogue :/
Exactly. Esc/space don't work for the actual cutscenes, only intro videos as far as I have seen. :(

I played most of it on 360, you can take my word for it that it's an amazing game if you're into sci-fi settings. I only stopped playing it on 360 because I heard about the PC version coming out. :D

Price match the Jersey place with the purple shirt place and get it cheaper. That's my plan. Worked with Conan. :D

I read elsewhere that although the '10 day' thing has been removed, you can only activate it on 'different' machines up to three times, after which you have to contact EA for permission? Bearing in mind it isn't quite clear what constitutes 'different hardware' - ie. changing components within your existing PC possibly.

I've just got it as well. Going to install later. Ulf g0t MSN?
Aye I'm still on MSN but not using it for OcUK.

Yeah three different machines, but I think if you uninstall first you get an activation back.

I don't suppose there will be a demo of this?

UT 3 doesn't run at a high framerate on my machine, but given that this game is slower paced, that might not be a problem - but I'd like to know before I buy, especially with the restrictions on selling the game used.

edit - I see they've said on their official forum that there isn't going to be a demo :/

Whoever told you it's a horrible console port doesn't know the meaning of the phrase. :D

It's obviously been ported properly in my opinion. Not seen any bugs or glitches yet, and the whole interface and control system have been rebuilt properly to accommodate PC gaming.
