The Mass Effect (PC) Discussion Thread

Started playing last night, and was highly impressed the first major CGI cutscene with the "normandy" just killed me, THEN i realised I wasnt running at full resolution, I thought the game would only got to 1280 as it was a port, nope config tool in game directory and BAM 1680, im in love now!:D

im using Keyboard and mouse, I got lost planet and gears of war for PC and they felt better with KB+M this is no different, for me.:)

Loving this game so far but there are a few technical issues that require hand tweaking.

It seems there's a bug with the config program that can bork the 5.1 OpenAL settings under Vista. I'm not sure what part of the below fixes it, but it works a treat and also gives you 128 channel sound instead of the default 64. You need to replace the following section in bioengine.ini:

[ISACTAudio.ISACTAudioDevice]
UseEAX=True
Use3DSound=True
UseDefaultDriver=True
MaxEAXVersion=5
UsePrecache=True
MaxChannels=128
CompatibilityMode=False
UseFilter=True
UseReverb=True
TimeBetweenHWUpdates=15
UseEffectsProcessing=False
LowQualitySound=False
DisablePitch=False
OutputRate=48kHz
MinOggVorbisDurationGame=20
MinOggVorbisDurationEditor=4
NoHALSupport0=RealTek AC97
NoHALSupport1=SigmaTel Audio
NoHALSupport2=Realtek HD Audio output
NoHALSupport3=Sound Blaster Audigy
NoHALSupport4=SB Audigy
//DeviceName=

Obviously Vista can't use EAX, but regardless part of that config is making OpenAL work properly with 5.1.

Credit goes to SuperMario from here.

It refuses to save settings/games. Unfortunately whenever you search for that particular problem you get details about the warez versions of the game.

To be honest, my system has been funny about file permissions for a while now so I should really look at the problem a bit more globally (e.g. wipe, reinstall, forget about it for another few months) ;p
