20,000 RPM raptors on their way

bout time. even my old freecom cd writer used to spin the disks at 10k lol. they should in all honestly be easily capable of achieving 20k in a closed hdd

Lol.. Next we'll be using CERN with atomic racing (like the new racetrack memory).. bit faster than 20Krpm though..

We're more likely to see a 15K RPM drive first.

Bear in mind the VelociRaptor took over 1.5 years from when it was put on the roadmap and the 15K is to be developed first. I can't see this coming till at least 2010-2012.

When I spoke to WD yesterday they said they are getting prepared for SSD but do not see it as an immediate problem for now.

slackworth, ask them about a 15k and 20krpm raptor and say you saw this article. I'd love a 20krpm raptor! If they can get 4ms access times and 140mb/sec avg it would be the king of kings, currently the velociraptor will be killed my 2 * samsung 640gb drives in raid0 except for seek times of course but a 20krpm drive would be about the same speed hopefully as 2 raided non-raptor drives. It may actually be worth a £190+ price tag for a change.

Do this to disable disk indexing:

The only downside is it slows that startbar's search feature down, and the benefit is that it doesnt search the hard drive for updated files all day and night.
