24 Hour Supermarkets

I think the main reason that they won't change the law on sunday opening hours is that small local shops (e.g. spar etc) do a large % of their trade on a sunday afternoon/evening. So it would be a tough decision to allow tesco etc to open 24/7 and take this business away from the small shops.

There prices shouldn't be sky high then. Or find other ways to make money.

They should start selling games at a ridiculous hour on weekends! :D

People that don't work in retail are the sorts that think stores should be open 24/7, I on the other hand know how pushy supermarkets can be and they would quite easily convince those who are less firm to work the extra hours, as 'favours'.

I don't see why a few less hours one day a week which everyone knows happens is such a biggie, can't people just plan ahead a bit or pay the extra at at a metro store.

EDIT: /rant - this subject comes up often and it really annoys me that people don't think that others have lives.

That makes no sense, I use to work at the largest Asda in England. How does trying to make you work more got anything to do with changing an archaic law.

People want it as we are a 24/7 society. Apart from shopping and delivery companies.

they shouldn't be allowed to advertise as a 24hr store unless they are in Scotland imo.

24hr opening makes sense to me with supermarkets anyway - you've got staff in stocking shelves so why not sell a few things too?

If they changed the laws the supermarkets would instantly turn to those hours, but would not want to take on a proportional amount of new staff instead expecting everyone to start working these new hours, by performing the usual begging and borrowing that they do.

That's up to you, you should not be agreeing to bad laws out of a whim like that.
They would also ask if people wanted to change there contracts then make up the short full with OPTIONAL overtime. All managers in all sectors are pushy. If you can't stand your ground that's your fault.

But yes, not opeiong on a sunday is a silly rule. They dont have it in Scotland. The only issue is it automatically costs the stores 1.5x as much in staff costs, so they would be fairly reluctant to do it.

I'm sure that probably wouldn't bother big firms such as Tescos, who would probably rake all the money back in on the extra profits they would make over the day...

All large stores have a nightcrew that can be trained to have good customer service. Only 1 of them needs to keep an eye on the self checkout section incase there are problems. Job done!

What's bad about them? It gives some people a day off. Tesco and all the others flout the law left right and centre the law should remain as a day when staff can't be manipulated.

I agree with you there (not that i work in retail btw). a lot of businesses seem to be open all hours for no good reason. Call centres for unimportant things seem to be open 24/7 or open untill 00:00 for not good reason
