Fun reliable replacement for an ST2

Much like many other people atm I'm trying to tighten my belt a bit for a storm thats coming in Feb when my northern rock fixed rate comes to an end.

After sending my wife out to work, getting smart price all round and generally behaving like a pauper the next thing on the list is my Focus ST.

Its technically a company car as I get £10k (before tax) a year to pay for it and I have a fuel card.

However I went from a standing start out of another company car scheme, no deposit etc and a 3yr pcp is still £450 a month and I reckon I could cut that in 3 easily.

Plus I do a lot of miles and frankly I think fords service intervals (12.5k) are a joke and aimed at raising money, my car feels just as tight after 42k in 18 months as it did when I got it. Its due a service and it really doesn't need it.

So.. I'm thinking of swapping to something I can have fun with but won't cost too much.. £5 to £6k maybe £7k at a push, it needs to be reliable as I do NEED my car but the high mileage is hidden in a 500 mile round trip maybe twice a month, most of the time its just a 50 mile round trip to the office.

So far I've been thinking things like an ST220 or ST170, maybe a Golf 1.8T or maybe even an alfa 156 (gulp! reliable??).

Could I get away with things like supras or GT4s? Would they take the stick or should I steer clear?

Suggestions please!!! I need something that will give me that final push to ditch the ST2 before the debt collectors do! :p

12.5k thats just the recommended service intervals....Don't mean you have to take it in....
just change the oil/fitler yourself and check the brakes, water level, oil level etc yourself and take it in at 15k intervals

Am guessing very few people do take there car/bikes in at the recommended service intervals unless there loaded..

Getting the oil changed every 12.5k is no bad thing for a turbo car.

Other marques do run much longer intervals, but they require expensive oils and the servicing costs are higher.

It seems you need something cheap to buy, reliable, cheap servicing and running costs but don't care about fuel. An ST220 serviced at an independant garage would fit the bill nicely.

I wouldn't mind an oil change but not £180 worth of "service" to maintain the warranty and any hope of a decent resale price!

I keep coming back to this ST220!!! I had an ST24 before and I must admit I did enjoy the mixture of poise, performance and practicality.

I even talked one of the guys in the office into one and having his huge black ST220 next to my car makes mine look like a toy!

Yes it does.

Please stop offering advice in this thread, it's a load of rubbish and could cost the OP a fortune. FEW people will buy a car where the owner has ignored the service intervals. They are not recommendations, they are requirements!

12500 is alright i think, if it was my own car, i'd even change the oil every 6k aswell

did you know the vectra intervals are 30,000 miles.. far too long tbh and another reason why so many companies use them over mondys/passats :(

My celica is serviced every 4K miles!

I would recommend sticking to the service intervals on a performance car unless you want to take a BIG hit when you sell it.

I was thinking exactly what Hate said, surley if you don't wanna take a hit when it comes to selling it on, you get the servicing done...

LOL

I never had any services done on any my cars and i never had a problem with selling them....
And my motorbikes i only ever had the first 600mile service done...the rest i do myself...

I think 12.5k is too much! And a service doesn't make a car thats running rough brilliant again usually its the lack of servicing that can get them there in the first place.

If had payed for services on my car every 12.5k miles it would have cost me about £2560 just in service costs (about £400 a service)

So you sell cars with no history and never have a problem? You are being economical with the truth or selling 400 quid bangers.

£400 for each and every service? Do you drive an Audi R8?
