Sigh, slightly annoyed...

I worked at my local Tesco for 2.5 years and bearing in mind i am almost 20, that is a long time. I left to go to Uni and i returned recently. About a month ago i spoke to the store manager and inquired about getting my job back. He seemed interested and said to come back closer the time i wanted to work. Low and behold i am back, had words with a few managers informally and i was told they would get back to me tonight. I also discovered they had just had a 'recruiting campaign'! So they have recruited, not informed me and just kept me hanging around. Either way, i don't have a place. :(

So best way to get a job? I don't have a CV and i'd prefer to fill in an application form...my next plan of action is a Sainsburys down the road but otherwise i'm stuck. :(

It will only be until August - do companies employ for a short period of time?

Help.

If you head to the job center and ask for warehouse/factory jobs you will almost always come up with a few. They are usually car parts/plastics/rubber manufacturing and shift-based. Good money too. I was looking for a job for the summer until college in September last week and got it on the second day of looking. Your biggest qualm may be shift times but money is money and beggars can't be choosers.

Sussex should have a lot of those kinds of jobs going.

Today I simply went round and handed my CV to several coffee shops and bars. Had to dumb it down a bit and put emphasis on 'bar work' situations mind!

Print out a few generalised CVs and hand them out, perhaps?

You left looking for a summer job until after most students have finished, and you're suprised you didn't get one? :p

Try a few restaurants. Maybe you could get a kitchen porter type job.

Mm, in all honesty, i assumed i'd get my old job back...i have many friends, well known, been in the store since it opened, trained in most areas and so on.

Off to the Job Centre i guess, bleh.

for summer jobs you don't need much on a cv.

education and previous jobs.
Leave out the degree.

Just download some example cv's use google.

You need to get a CV. You'll get much better jobs than those you would get by filling out an application form.

I know how you feel, I absolutely loathed the time I went into the job center - they treat you like a criminal if you're young, one of the side effects of a dole scrounging country. Seeing so many older people who look rough and dishevelled just being there to scrounge the dole too (their dole books were filled with months of visiting every two weeks and claiming).... just royally ****** me off. It only took me 1 trip to get something. **** these people.

In my experience the staff can be very helpful if you actually make an effort to help yourself.

Hmm, so what makes a good CV?

I can happily say a lot about my personality and i come across very polite etc. in person but as for my education - a few ASs and i think 1 or 2 A-Levels...got the GCSEs though and just completed my 1st year of Uni (Psychology).

References also - i just have Tesco but it IS 2.5 years i suppose...should be fine?

Nitefly - Thanks for the Google tip! :)
