Apple and the mobile services are cash hungry, willing to flog the idea to death and make as much money out of it. They think people are stupid enough to pay over the odds for it. With the last gen they clearly didn't with the whole unlocking scene. You would have thought they would have learnt a lesson.

Plus the advert is crap. Something Raef would have made off the Apprentice.

It feels like they are about to sell Beer (miller/Coors/Bud) at the start, or may be that's just the voice.

The tariffs are still extremely poor, unfortunately.

I don't see why someone would be openly willing to pay £35 p/m for those resources when I pay £15 p/m for unlimited texts and 02 calls. It's nothing short of madness.

I still think the Pay As You Go iPhone is going to be one of those surprise price points in a bad way. I reckon something ridiculous around £400 and they'll make you pay for upgrades in the same way iPod Touch users have had to. (Which has just been a parade of greedy money-grabbing from Apple)

It's high because people are willing to pay it. And also because Apple take a chunk of the monthly fees from O2 to recoup the cost (and some profit, naturally!)

This is probably correct, for the reason I gave above. They have to make their money on it somewhere!

Im thinking it could be still the same prices on PAYG, not sure why, or £159 for the 8GB etc. Cant wait!

If it is it will be a miracle. Chances are very small.

My money is still on £269-£299 for the 8GB model and £329-£350 for the 16BG model.

But are people willing to pay it? I don't think they are, I don't know many people who signed up to the original tariffs and the massive growth of the unlocking market proves this. Ziphone has really only been around since 1.1.3 but it has had 3,000,000 downloads!

Still be interesting though as he said $199 world wide, if they stick to that even on PAYG, that'll be absolutely astonishing.

Press release...

O2 today announced that the innovative iPhone 3G will be available in the UK on July 11 for free on selected O2 consumer and business tariffs and that it will also be available for Pay & Go customers. Existing iPhone customers will be able to upgrade to the new iPhone 3G, taking advantage of the same great offers as new customers.

iPhone 3G combines all the revolutionary features of iPhone with 3G networking that is twice as fast* as the first generation iPhone, built-in GPS for expanded location based mobile services, and iPhone 2.0 software which includes support for Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync and runs the hundreds of third party applications already built with the recently released iPhone SDK.

"The iPhone is already a phenomenal success in the UK and now we're making this revolutionary product more affordable for even more customers," said Ronan Dunne, CEO of O2 in the UK. "iPhone quickly became our fastest selling device ever and with this new pricing, iPhone 3G is an unbeatable proposition."

iPhone 3G will be available in the UK through O2, Carphone Warehouse and Apple's retail and online stores with the early upgrade offer for existing customers only available through www.o2.co.uk/iPhone where anyone can also register their interest in iPhone 3G for regular news and updates.

The 8GB iPhone 3G will cost just £99 on a new £30 per month tariff and the existing £35 per month tariff. Consumers choosing either the £45 or £75 per month tariffs will get the 8GB iPhone 3G for free. The 16GB iPhone 3G will cost £159 on the £30 and £35 tariffs, £59 on the £45 tariff and it will be free on the £75 tariff. All customers will continue to receive unlimited data browsing over O2’s HSDPA network and unlimited access to 9,500 Wi-Fi hotspots through both The Cloud and now BT Openzone**. Both the 8GB and 16GB iPhone 3G will also be available for O2 Pay & Go customers with pricing to be confirmed in the coming weeks.

Fit for Business

iPhone 3G will also be available on current O2 business tariffs as a monthly bolt on, with the device available for free on the majority of business tariffs on a 24 or 36 month contract. iPhone 3G business customers can also receive many of the same benefits as existing O2 business customers including unlimited calls between O2 customers, unlimited calls to ten landlines, shareable minutes and texts between users plus multi-user billing and activation and free, 24x7 access to business customer care specialists.

*Based on 3G and EDGE testing. Actual speeds vary by site conditions **Subject to O2’s excessive use policy

no chance.

minium contract of £30 PM for 18 months = £540 + £159 = £699

PAYG for £159 would make no business sence to apple at all. everyone would buy that and get get a simpicity sim.

It'll probably lose them money too.

O2 are the only ones we know of thinking about offering PAYG. I'm fairly sure Jobs would have been talking about iPhone + Contract for 'no more' than $199 up front.

Just have to be patient.

Agreed, Apple will need more that $199 to make the margins they want from selling the handset PAYG.

£159...........dreamland or what lol

The £169 price was at the end of its cycle when Apple trying to shift stock, even then they expected people to sign up. Even at £269 they expected people to sign up to contracts, so how much do you think they are going to charge when they are not expecting people to sign up to their contract?

It sucks but it's not money grabbing, accounting rules require them do this in products where they have already recognised the revenue and add new features, if they had deferred all (or a portion) of the revenue they wouldn't need to charge, but they couldn't recognise the money in their profits until now, which would suck for them.

People still won't really be able to afford it tho.

No one my age will be able to get the £35 or higher and if they opt for the £30 they use a hell of a lot more credit than is given.

For PAYG, its going to be a hell of a lot and still people won't afford it.

The have seriously ****ed up on the "more affordable" sides of things.

Why? It's about equivalent to what I pay for my current windows mobile smartphone on t-mobile.

This is priced very competitively for what you get. The original, however, was massively overpriced.

Still possible, we all didnt expect the current one to be below £150-200, let alone £100!

But yeah probably the old prices for PAYG? Maybe a touch more.
