Cars with Keyless Entry

But it seems that for just about every other manufacturer, unless you're buying the 2007/2008 model year, its not even an option. Ford introduced the S-Max as a brand new car in 2006, and this doesnt have it either as recently as 2006 !

One more thing, the Ford Key Free system has been an option on the Ford Focus Mk2 since launch. I dont think it would suit a MPV or heavily used/practical cars.

I do wonder where you get your information from sometimes - that's just not true.

Lets get something straight before we go off on one.

I'm talking about the keyless entry where you don't even have to press any buttons. You just walk up to the car with the card in your pocket, get in, and push start, and where you do have to replace the battery far to often.

Surley thats the same with most new card systems - my car charges the battery of the keyfob whilst its in the ignition but the newer BMW's with the cards dont.

This IS what the thread is about right? How much is often? Maybe Rilot or somebody could comment?

NOW I know why Volvo keyfobs are so big! :

Working in conjunction with the new 2007 Volvo S80, the Personal Car Communicator fob provides information such as whether the car is locked or unlocked and whether the alarm is activated or not.

But it's most innovative feature, however, is the world's first ever heartbeat sensor. Using a highly sensitive heartbeat sensor in the car, and an advanced calculation process, it can tell the owner, via the fob, whether there is someone in the car or not.

Keyless entry has to be an excellent idea if it works.

Keys in pocket.

Go to the door, press button to open door, get in, press button and go!

Get out of car, press button to lock and leave.

Much better than fumbling with a keyfob and then putting it in the start and twisting it, yes I am that lazy.

The BMW start button is pointless crap.

Same, my old R52 used to charge the key in the ignition, but the R56 which has the fob and slot doesn't...

I had a 2007 BMW 320i M Sport for 2 days with Comfort Access. It auto locked the car as you walked away, but wouldn't allow the car to start unless the card was clicked into place under the Start button. It wouldnt even turn the instrument panel on.

Then something was wrong.

6 months on and no problems, no battery changes and the battery indicator light on the fob is fine.

Does your 330d not require the key in the slot then?

Yes, it does. But does not have Convenient Access though. Fob looks the same but it was an option.

You sure it didn't have convinient opening, Fox? because i'm sure that just means opening all the windows/Sunroof or the Softop on all BMW/Minis...

surely this isnt safe if you park your car near the front door of your house - then leave the keys on a table near the front door?

just wondering what the radius is? if its 1 metre fair enough

if its above 3 metres then potentially you could get everything nicked from your car

i mentioned something similar earlier to do with bluetooth and mobile phones, where my cousins phone was still connected to his car even though the car was a fair distance away and had been turned off for several hours

I might look stupid but I'm not stupid enough to mistake the system all BMW's have, even my own, which allows you to lower the windows from the key with a comfort access facility.

It's becuase its a gimmick most people don't want.

It's not a gimmick at all, or are you just intentionally trying to portray yourself as stupid?

The system works perfectly and the only people who say that they wouldn't want it are those that don't know what it involves or are the same type of people who dislike central locking and like putting keys into locks and like using windy windows.

Yes, yes I am. It's actually a very popular feature which, since it first emerged a number of years ago, is now a common option on many cars, and standard fitment on many more....

... oh hang, this thread is about why it hasn't seemed to take off.

Don't get me wrong, I wouldnt complain if my next car had it but neither would I seek it out.

... get in, press button and go!

I'm lost. With keyless entry, you need a start button, obviously. If your car has got the option, it's no different fro Lexus and Audi, my fob never leaves my pocket but I still have to push a button to start the car.

If I had ticked the option on the BMW spec sheet, it would be the same.

I can't think what i was doing wrong. I was pressing the start button for all I was worth and it wouldnt start. Put the key in the slot, pressed it again, off we went

It definately unlocked the doors automatically though.

Did you have your foot on the brake?
