Even though I dispute this claim, people should do some research before splashing out that amount of cash.
Why on earth would you dispute it? That's how much they cost.

*remembers when I paid 425 for a launch system and no games*
Should have made it clearer. I disupte the no games part.

Most of the new games require installing taking anything up to 25 minutes. It's an absolute pain and they are quite big installs. For example DMC4 is a 4.9GB install so that 40 GB hard drive isn't going to last long.
Reason for these installs? Blu-Ray is only 1x read speed.

so I don't see why you have to on the PS3.
So dont dispute it, the 60GB console was £425 on release, trust me, its what it cost me. Bundle deals appeared about a mnth later for about £430 with the console adn a game, but if you wanted it on release it was £425.
I'm getting my ps3 on monday finally with GTA4 and GT5 prologue. So i can chenge the Hd as simple as getting a new 120gb laptop hd and fitting it? Will it affect warranty?
Spot on.
One of the reasons why I sold mine, you don't need to do that on the 360 so I don't see why you have to on the PS3.
Having to endure a 5-10 minute install each time is worth it just for the fact that the PS3 is so quiet. Maybe if the 360 installed games, it wouldn't need to make so much noise.
Same, but i really dont mind, its been my most used console that ive ever owned so its earned it price. It also brilliant when people ask if you own a PS3, the look of envy you get when you say you bought a 60GB console.
Drive speeds are not as simple as you may believe.
The PS3 has a 2× BD at or 9MB/s (72Mb/s) Constant Linear Velocity.
DVDs use Constant Angular Velocity and therefore do not have a constant read speed. They read faster the further from the middle the data is. They also read dual layer discs slower than single player ones. The drives used in the 360 are 12x for single player DVD-5 and 8x for dual layer DVD-9. Most 360 games are on DVD-9.
12x read speed max 15.85MB/s, average is 8x or 10.57MB/s
8x read speed max 10.57MB/s, average is 6x or 7.93MB/s
As you can see the 360 drive can be slower or faster than the PS3's BD depending on what kind of disc is in use and where on the disc you are reading from. That is going off perfect results, which doesn't happen often.
The end result is that both drives are relatively similar in speed, though the PS3 usually has the edge when in game, but lacks behind on loading. This is because Game discs are mastered, meaning they put the data that is accessed often or is time-critical on the fast bit of the DVD. This fast bit is faster than the PS3s BD drive, so 360 developers can use that to their advantage during loading. There are other ways around it but an install is usually the easiest option so thats what a lot of devs go for.
