A friends computer stopped working, I opened it up and was greeted with the fan hanging out of the gfx card after it seems the plastic holding it in has melted, picture below.

It's a 3 year old pc and has X700se, I've been looking around to see what a comparable card to it would be but am struggling, I realise it is a shockingly poor card, do you think around a £35 card would be equal to this or even an upgrade?

... ROFL.

Ideally I would be looking for a second hand 7800/7900 or X1800/1900/1950 series card for that price, as new cards in that price bracket are cack (8500 GT, 3470, etc).

Wouldn't the 3450 be a massive upgrade though from the old x700se.

Maybe a bit, I wouldn't say 'massive' though.

2400 XT, 2400 Pro and 6600 GT, in which the 6600 GT beats both of them in overall FPS.

The 6600 GT seems to beat the X700LE by a sizeable margin to a relatively small margin in the benchmarks in this article:

So the 3450 should perform inbetween the 2400 Pro and XT cards, which in turn performs worse than the 6600 GT, which beats the 700LE. This means that while the potential for a speed boost is certainly there, it's never going to be a massive difference.

I say, since you have the money, you might as well go for an older, faster product than a newer, much slower product.

Edit: Oh right, the se. Hmm, not sure how that affects this post...

I stand by getting a second hand 7800/7900 or X1800/X1900, etc. though as they will be much faster than any of those other cards.

X800XT's go around that price and are the most powerfull out of 6600GT/7600GT etc.. but dont support SM3.0 so best bet is look around for something like a 7600GT or X1950Pro.

Lol it does make you wonder how long it took between the fan seizing up/dieing and the card actually packing in!

He said he heard some funny noise around 3-4 months ago so probably then, it does beg the question though why did it happen? I've vacced the case and components and there was some major dust in there so maybe just that which caused it to overheat.
