Ati 4850 price released.

I'm willing to pay 150-180 for a 4870, 115-130 for a 4850....I won't buy them til they are around that pricing.

Otherwise you can just pick up a used 8800GTX for 110-130 quid!

Erm, these seem pretty reasonable cards, but what are Ati's like to X-Fire?

Heard nothing but bad things about SLI (fan boys be gone ;) ), but not really found much out about X-Fire setup's because for the price of these it seems like it's a much preferred option than forking out for one of the Nvidia's new releases - although they do seem rather nice.. but would instantly double my budget so not worth it (until some reviews for both are out)

My experience of crossfire was a good one in terms of performance. I had a voltmodded 8800GTS 512mb and it couldn't even begin to keep up with my 3850/3870 crossfire.

However, the heat from two cards dumped into my case was a bit annoying, and it was more power than I needed so I sold my 3870.

I broke 17,070 in 3dmark06 with a dual core with the two cards though...highest dual core crossfire score using a Conroe on OcUK I think...and CoD4 played 16xAF 8xAA 1680x1050 max details averaging 90ish FPS.

Crikey! That's impressive, will be interesting to see how these perform then, cheers for that.

yes I'm thinking 2 x 4850s in crossfire are going to be miiighty powerful. That's 1600 SPs workin' for you!

yes £200 does, because it's been released for $199...

And we've all discussed the 1:1 dollar to pound conversion rate we often get over here in rip-off Britain.

I'm not saying that £200 would be a fair price, more that i wouldn't be *that* shocked.

I sincerely hope it's £110-£130 though.

Q6600@ 3.8ghz 8800GT 721/1022 15,554 (easyrider's clock)

The 4850 is not worth buying if you have a 8800GT

"RV7000"
"480"

A particular seller on the river site doesn't know his subject very well tbh.

Although 'RV7000' sure does sound cool. I can't wait for that core to come out. I wouldn't even call the card by its real name, just 'RV7000!' I mean, come on, you can't say no to the RV7000 X2. :p

Mmm, to me, the 4850 seems exactly the same performance as the 8800GT, so yeah if it's £130 notes here, then yeah, it'll be the best card to go for, but then again, in a few weeks I'd assume the 8800GT will be what, £90? You can already buy them for £103 Inc VAT... so... it's one fo them really have the new technology or slightly older but same performance?

Cheers Pug

14,254 with a 4ghz quad? :(

I was getting 15,554 with my 8800GT and Q6600@ 3.8ghz

Yeah my single 8800GT at 750/1900/2200 and a Q6600 at 3.5ghz (all 24.7 settings) was 15301... so.. give or take the 4850 is around the same as a 8800GT... however, we have to bear in mind, ATI is releasing this for budget sector, it's the 4870x2 everyone is really waiting for... as that's the only one that WILL beat GT280! :p

I agree with the 4850 price, but the 4870 is meant to be 40% quicker than a £220 9800GTX so why on earth would it only be £150-£180?

Expect the 4870 to be £230-£240 on launch, dropping 6 weeks later when the 4870x2 comes out.

too much variation in 3dmark06 scores to compare unless the reviewer does it on the same rig.. My 3.8 quad with a GTS G92 at 850/2100/2200 only got 15683 and i'm 3rd on the database on this forum for single gpu/quad core.

And comparing overclocked cards to stock cards is irrelevant. What happens when you run the 4850 at 900Mhz instead of 600Mhz?

Agreed, but they can to an extent get away with ripping off the high end gamers, but much less inclinded to screw around with the budgent/mid end that makes up more of there income. They wouldnt get away with a £200 that is supposedly a budget card, I dont think even bill gates would consider that a budget! Sub £150 my money is on, and a £199 for the 4870.
