Decided after the latest increase in fuel prices that enoughs enough and i'm getting out the taxi business. after speaking to one of the other fleet operators locally i#m going to sit down and hammer out a deal to get rid of the octybuses and get the hell out what can now only be described as a bloody brutal business. Currently burning 900-1000 litres a week in fuel and its just too much now my business model is shot to pieces and i'm struggling to break even some weeks. So its goodbye nasty vag diesels and hello s1 jobs :)

How is it still not profitable?

I used to get charged £13 to get taken 6 miles (evening) or £8 during the day now that was a little while ago but even my Range Rover would that for £4 in petrol and a diesel VAG is 6x more efficent.

There are obviously far more costs than my simple view but would like to know what real term costs are

I am sure they are set by the council in Glasgow and set for a period of years so he can't raise his prices.

spot on fares were set last october for 3 years, fuel costs repairs driver issues its just all getting too much and i'm going to chuck it whilst i can still get a good price for plated taxis :) :)

fully expect fuel to hit 1:50 a litre in the next couple of months and its bad enough just now

What are you going to do instead?

going to take a couple of weeks of well deserved rest then start job hunting, got a few irons in the fire already hell i might even find time to finish the e30 shed off.

get a fleet of ric-shaws(sp) and lots of Polish workers

Be quids in :)

nah the poles are already running about in octavias :)

you dont know ricky kilbride do ya? im sure he runs a few octys and superbs in glasgow!

who does he run them through GPH, Network, Key etc etc?

no idea mate, Network rings a bell, know he owns about 5 octys and at least one superb,,,,,used to work with me in IBM

nah dont know him tbh

dont know what i'm going to do tbh really, but i'm getting out of it before i start loosing money and get stuck with 1/2 dozen octavias that end up sitting idle Taxi business in Glasgow is getting harder and harder and more people are looking for a slice of a ever shrinking pie, People are tightening their belts(less non vital journeys ) fuel prices as already stated are sky high and drivers are getting more and more frightened to go out in Glasgow

The guy who runs the taxi business that ferries us lot all over Manc with work was talking to me about this last week. It's certainly an awful state of affairs trotters, the bigger operators seem to be able to soak it up more, but then everyone seems to be praying the council or whatnot agree on a sensible rise. Anyway, I hope you find an agreeable sort of job. :)

Hmm with fuel prices bound to come down at a bit at some point, or councils forced to review pricing it would seem the companies that can stick in the game will see a big increase in demand from picking up the work that all those that go under had.

Take on a couple of Romanians, get a dis-used car park or something and get a "Soapy Joes" set up, theres one by me who now is booking only they are that busy, the others charge £4 for a wash and wax, they are always full!
