Spelling and Grammar..Yes or no?

I would have to say that the majority on this Forum are probably well educated and intelligent people. It is primarily a computer forum after all.

Why is it then, that the spelling and grammar is quite often shocking? For example "should have" instead of "should have". Or "there" instead of "their". Or "brake", in place of "break". Etc. Etc.

Is school really that bad these days? Are teachers worse? Are people more stupid, or ignorant? It cannot be deliberate, so is it simply that people can't be bothered?

I believe one of your commas should have been a semi-colon. ;)

To answer your question, most people can't be bothered to use correct spelling and grammar on the internet. I find this quite annoying, this even extends to text messaging for me, i simply wont read a text message that's incomprehensible. This used to annoy some of my friends, they've since learnt to type properly. ;)

Sorry I didn't read all of your post, you spelled a word incorrectly.

OMGWTFBBQWHERE? :D

I dont mean spelling errors (i let those slide - years on IRC have forced that on me), it's things like 'c', 'u', 'wen' etc. in text messaging that i hate

It's not interesting at all. People haven't changed at all. People will always be stupid. Society's the same, it's just got different surroundings.

I don't think that it is. I have seen dramatically different outlooks on life in different parts of the World, and I do believe that society is changing.

If educational standards drop because "that's all right Jack", where does it end?

No one gets upset at people who are poor at maths, so why English?
But the people who are bad at maths don't tend to make posts on public forums claiming opinions on things that are automatically undermined by the lack of coherence in their output*.

I'm not saying everyone is like that, I'm just talking about your generic internet troll type.

*Well they might. But they'd do it in English, not mathematics

I failed at English in school. That does not imply that I can neither spell, nor exercise proper use of grammar.

Of course, there are always spelling mistakes and typos. I make them all the time, I'd be less than human if I didn't. It's just the "txt speek" that I can't bear. Is it really that time consuming to type properly, even when actually texting? Whenever I'm texting it actually takes me longer to type like that than it does to type properly. I usually just don't bother reading texts that are presented in that utter mind rot.

I think so too, my Oxford English says it is..

My highest official English qualification is a C at GCSE level though, what do I know?

I got a C in GCSE English but that was many years ago when reading a book was unheard of for a teenager and the internet was uncommon.

Since then though I have managed to improve my written English ten fold thanks to the internet and the immense amount of reading I do on a daily basis from multiple sources.

I guess many people don't improve because they stick to one part of the net because they are constantly exposed to the same typos and errors in English - my forum browsing alone is quite large and in every forum the writing style is very different! I find Neowin has a better written community than here for example but OCUK is more tight nit and homely.

Some folk just can't be arsed to capitalise the start of a sentence or add a missing ' which I am quite guilty of some times when in a rush or posting in multiple places (thank you tabbed browsing!)

People just need to read more, the more you read the more you begin to spot your own errors, you tend to go "hey wait a sec! that structure does not look right!" and you begin to edit it to be correct......at least I do anyway :p
