All New Summer 2008 Transfer Merry Go Round/Rumour Mill

A lot of talk about Spurs signing Mario Santana from Fiorentina... meant to be fairly good, but it begs the questions... why are we interested in another AMF? why are fiorentina selling him?

Ramos probably reckons that our entire midfield needs replacing and I reckon he'll go with 4-5-1/4-3-3 next season.

Depends if it involves players. Would have to expect the world record is going though.

My guess would be more like the £40m + player that has been suggested by some papers, although I think we should be looking for a little more to be able to say we've done as well as we could out of it.

Rafa Benitez may be considering ripping up his plans for the summer after growing exasperated with the 'ludicrous' fees demanded for his original transfer targets.

Both The Daily Mirror and Guardian claim that Benitez has added the name of David Silva to his wish-list despite previous indications that buying the £20m-rated Spanish star would be beyond Liverpool's means. The disclosure that Benitez is interested in signing the Spaniard may signal a dramatic shift in focus or could be an act of brinkmanship from the Spaniard after being repeatedly rebuffed in his attempts to sign Gareth Barry.

Liverpool's latest bid for the midfielder was rejected late last week and if they shelved their interest then Villa would be in an invidious position. Although Barry has confirmed his determination to leave, Liverpool are, as yet, the only club to make an offer for his services. Despite speculation to the contrary, neither Arsenal nor Chelsea have showed any interest in acquiring the Villa captain.

Were Benitez to use the money earmarked for the purchase of Barry in order to pursue Silva then the player may look favourably on a transfer to Anfield. The player is described as being 'close' to Liverpool's chief scout, Eduardo Macia, who coached him through Valencia's youth system, while cash-strapped Valencia could be persuaded to sell for less than £20m.

Benitez's own money problems are easing, with his coffers increased by £4m this week following the sale of John Arne Riise to Roma. Scott Carson, Peter Crouch and Jermaine Pennant are also available for transfer.

The signing of Silva ahead of Barry is very good IMO. However it is risky. He hasn't impressed so far in Euro 08. I'm not sure he is the type of player that will adapt to the PL, however he is a player of quality and very young. We NEED a right winger very badly, someone of quality (Not freaking Bentley) who is also a match winner.

Although it might seem a bit out of our reach to lure him, I'm sure Rafa could do it. Especially if Silva is close to the staff.

If he is going then I'd expect it to be for a World record fee, so probably around £60 million as he is arguably the best player in the World, as Zidane was* when he went to Real so whatever Zidane went for + a few million if cash transfer or about the equivalent to Zidane's fee and a player. Partly I'd expect it to be so high as a matter of ego but mainly because Man Utd don't really have to sell and they appear to be acting obstinately which will drive up the price as wedgie says.

*ok he was inarguably the best player in the World at the time but you get the point.

what do we REALISTICALLY think Ronaldo's fee will be if he goes ( not this £100m ******** ) ?

Good question Rotty. I think it will all depend on what the structure of the deal is. £60m deal might include Sergio Ramos or Robhino coming this way or £50m with an amount up front and the rest on the drip. What I am confident about is it won't be £60m or anything like it as a straight cash deal. Nor will we be burnt like we were under Kenyon when we sold Stam and Beckham with a small amount upfront and the rest in installments.

As for Ronaldo, I really do want him to go and I show him no respect at all. Everyone knows he want's to go and I am sure most fans would wish him well given he has achieved as much as he can with us. How he has conducted himself is arrogant beyond belief. He actually thinks that he shouldn't show any respect to the club fans or SAF for that matter. There has been a lot better players than him leave the club thats for sure and they are welcomed back with open arms. He has come across as a complete mercenary over the past few weeks. I would say a lot more in respect of how much he has annoyed me but it really isn't worth the effort

Good riddance

As I understand this deal has already been concluded in the fee of £4m. Not sure that we actually need him, but I feel that Ramos is looking to have a similar set up to the one he had at Seville, which could see us looking at a 4-3-3 formation. I cannot see a 4-5-1 formation with two class strikers, as it is, the 4-3-3 would see Keane and dos Santos playing wide with Berbatov (unless United sign him after selling Ronaldo) playing through the middle.

The £100m is likely to be unrealistic, and I would consider an offer of £40-£50m being more likely, with the possibility of Robinho being thrown in. However, if United are to sell, then I would expect them to be holding out for a World Record transfer fee plus player.

Agreed.

Given Sir Alex' past history with players that cause trouble I can see him leaving, time after time SAF has said that no player is bigger than the club, and trouble makers have nearly always left.

However, United haven't had a player of Ronaldo's ability before under SAF and this could be one of the reasons he doesnt want to sell, the other could be because its Real Madrid and he doesnt want to sell to them because of the way they have handled the scenario.

Yup and that's what annoys me so much. He really is a fantastic player. Without sounding too arrogant, I believe he could be on the brink of something fantastic that could go down in History with him Rooney & Tevez. All three of them have the potential to go down in history as a truly world class trio. Law, Best & Charlton. Van Basten, Gullit & Rijkaard, Di Stefano & Puskas etc etc. Yet he want's to pimp himself out for the supposed glory of playing in what is an inferior league for the famous Los Merengues

The fact is he is carrying an injury so he claims. Will he score another 40-50 goals, very doubtful. Madrid won't see the best of him till October/November at the earliest. If I were United I would take the money and run. Good bye, good luck and good riddance. Thanks for your efforts. Whatever good memories he gave us have certainly been soiled and dirtied with his antics over the last month

I dont care how much we get as long as long as he just goes and quick

Amazing player and it will be tough to get near replacing him, but as a professional, he's a total **** and I don't want someone like that at Man Utd

I agree. I overlooked his WC antics but coupled with this...

If he does stay he'll have zero respect from me (as if he cares though)
