*** ATI RADEON 4850 IN STOCK! ***

just a quick on relating to earlier posts... would replacing the thermal paste void the warranty?

No, as long as they can't tell that the cooler has been taken off. Some nV's partners allow this but I can't think of any ATI's would allow this.

They are both, the GDDR5 ones are not expected till July, so instead of waiting till then to launch them, they are going to launch them now with GDDR3.

@Loadsamoney, the screenshot Tom (I think?) posted showed that the 4870's which were named with GDDR3 memory actually had GDDR5 in the blurb. 'Tis a naming error, I reckon.

Where's Columbo when you need him  :D.

Thanks to the nice low staring price of the new 4850 i might be able to finally update my video card without my MRS cutting off my danglies
With the fact i have a friend willing to give me £50 for my current 7900GTX which is a great improvement over their current FX5200 and as they only play MOH its really overkill.
That should mean I'm only spending £80 to get a new card and if the 4870's come in at under £200 i might be able to push for one of those and still keep my danglies

so do they have sufficent numbers to release with GDDR5 now then, as they were saying they were going to have start with GDDR3 as they would only have a few cards ready with GDDR5, which would have meant a high premium price due to being very limited.

EDIT: Just found out they have plenty of GDDR5 now, i just can't keep up. :D

Question is how much of a difference will the 4870 have over the 4850, the core clock difference will obviously help a bit 125Mhz more etc but will the additional bandwidth make much of a difference as the 4850 already does extremely well at high resolutions with 4xAA (1920x1200 that is).

No, the official release date is next week with decent numbers coming in around the 8th of July IIRC.

Edit: I also remember at one point the 4850 was supposed to come with GDDR5 (fudzilla and Nordichardware lawl), I think they're using the memory types to differentiate the SKUs to be honest.

I think OCUK have seen how much hype the ATI cards have generated with such a great performing budget card that they're trying a little confusion themselves so when we see GDDR5 the need to buy is greater. All complete and utter nonsense mind you but it's plausible :D.

Could be. I mean the amount of rumours that were flying around about the RV770 core was laughable. I mean there were 3 different TMU configurations flying about the rumourmill, the debate over whether or not it had an unlocked shader clock or not, the amount of shaders, even the memory controller was debated for a while (after fudzilla reported the 4870 would have a 512-bit one a while back) it's kind of funny now that I look back on it.

Aye it was all smoke and mirrors. If this is what ATI/AMD(*) intended then they done an excellent job in duping us knowing all along that this card was going to be a cracker.

(*)I can't get used to saying AMD when talking about graphics.
