Purple shirt store interview

How did you apply?
Application form, CV or kiss the Manager's feet and beg for a job?

Was online application.

Syke just asked me the same thing on MSN. :D

Guess who will be getting visitors :D

:D

Ill have to come and find you in work if I get the job Sam. :D

Thought Id mention this.

They had two gaming PCs in store there.

Q6600
3gb memory
2 x 500gb hard drives
8800 GTX as the specs.

They where both housed in black Gigabyte 3D Aurora cases.

Exactly the same specs but £150 difference between the two.

The thing was the PC on the left had a 8800 GTX in and it had watercooling for the CPU, some gigabyte watercooling thing, single 120mm rad, pump built into cpu block. The odd thing was though the PC on the right had air cooled CPU and it had two 7600GT cards in SLI and not a 8800 GTX.

Was rather funny I thought. :D

I had a good one in the store today actually, I was shopping for a VGA cable for my 360, He asked...Is that the one with the three leads that goes into the back of a scart adapter?

No son... It's not. It's the one with the VGA socket on the end :p

umm.. no?
Your right that we dont work on commision, but we dont get anything for selling the warranties or credit agreements.

Hmm you must be getting stitched up by your manager then because when I worked there we got money/commision (however you want to put it) for every extended guarantee (WhateverHappens) we sell, and also for any of the different credit options they offer. This was certainly the case in the store I worked in, and every other store I know of in the area.

I tell them the same thing... in the BOLTON store lol....

How unfortunate for you to work there, there are some right dribblers in all of the Bolton stores. I've been in to each one and left all of them because they couldn't answer me simple questions about the products they sell.
Which one do you work in? The .digital town centre store? The Bolton Gate store? or the Middlebrook store?

Aye it is pretty bad, went in asking for the best cable router, they tried VERY hard to sell us the most expensive router there, that was only ADSL.

Wouldnt mind working there though, discount / money etc!

Its only 10% discount. Cheaper to buy online, even with staff discount.
Only perk I can see from working there is you get the option to have new software/hardware a day or two before it comes out, and you are first to know of any of the items which are becoming clearance lines and as such will have huge discounts on them to get rid of stock (think this is denoted by items ending in £x.97 or £x.96 or there abouts I think.)

Yeah, but atleast its a job that you know about, and can get stuff through them, know about new software etc as you said!

Will see what happens though.

I wouldnt count on getting hardware before it comes out. When the Wii came out, those who pre-ordered a week after it was announced didnt get one till a month after it launched. Their stock allocation for a lot of things is terrible. However when they do get things in you get first dibs.

I work in the tech guys in store. I used to be a customer advisor and it was actually my first job but I begged to take the available tech guy job that was going when it came up about 6 months ago as I couldn't stand having to explain every little basic thing to colleagues who didn't know what an rj45 cable was when a customer asked them or a pci slot or a usb 2.0 port for much longer ><

If you have any questions you want to ask I'm all ears as I've been there almost 3 years now (steady job, and well payed for a 16-18 year old so why move) so I know all the ins and outs :p

Explain Maginus to me :p

It's an unexplainable entity that seems to go down even if you so much as look at it or want to use it :p

It cannot be explained since I can never bloody use it to train on it because it's always ballsed up some how. It's just insanely unreliable

Well done !

I know BSM's that cant explain it any better than that :D

:p ha yeah, everytime I go to log in to eclipse there's always a little pop up from head office saying something along the lines of "sorry, maginus is down, no idea why, deal with it" :p

I do love head office

no worries, if you end up with any questions, just ask away.

Did you do the maths test that you usually have to do on thursday? I can't remember whether I did it all on the same day or if I was called in again another time.

Nope, not getting stiched up by the manager (like most people, i read the contract before signing). Sales advisors used to be payed on commision a good few years ago, but this was purely based on pound note sales. At christmas they used to give extra bonuses for selling paticular products and finances, but this was only during the holiday season and stopped just after the commision was removed.
and whateverhappens is a currys concept not pc world. Ours is called PC performance.

Aye, the wanderful One Team that they decided to go with.

Good in concept, but it meant that you no longer have any specialists, just lots of people with a little bit of knowledge on everything. Thankfully though, they've realised this and they're refitting a lot of the stores and bringing camera, gaming, hardware etc specialist training back :)

I didnt do any tests or any question forms, just had like a 20 min interview and that was it. He said it would be a couple of days until he gets back to me about it.

My Job in the 'purple store' was instrumental in getting my my post uni job earning a yearly salary of 40k+ in less than 18 months.

Do not under estimate the experience and skills you will develop articulating complex technical problems to very stupid people.

They are indeed, they are called champions.

I have been made connection champion - someone who specialises in Internet connections (sky,3g,vodafone,etc).
