This was over on Cableforum from a source that never posts wrong or false information, they obviously have a very well connected source.

Currently through the trial Usenet ports (including SSL) are throttled (reducing speeds down to 512k)

This, is, as far as one is aware going to be used for both in and out of peak hours for whoever they see "fit" as a heavy user.

I'm sure some of you noticed "Allot" was mentioned in another thread on here and i've had a few people asking me what this is.

It's currently what VM are using to trial application/throttling/management and is to be deployed across the VM network fully sometime either third quarter 2008 or first quarter 2009, the dates are unknown/rough ideas right now as things are being kept quiet over @ VM headquarters.

For me this signals the end for Virgin, 50MBIT is a none starter.

VM are quickly turning into a joke. It was bad before with the STM and Phorm, but this is the icing on the cake.

Heads off to check out Be.

With all these restrictions there soon wont be a need for 20mb let alone 50mb.

faster internet is not just about downloading LOTs of stuff, which is what heavy downloaders do. Faster connections also benifit people who want small stuff loaded faster, so even people who dont download torrents or use usenet, there are still reasons to use 20Mb or 50Mb connections.

So you're trying to say that you need 20/50mb for web surfing?:eek:

How small you talking?

Surely people can be patient enough with 2.4mb/sec for stuff under say 200mb. You would have it in nearly a minute and thats assuming every server you use will max it.

I could see your point if your talking about streaming 1080p content or something like that though.

But don't stream too much. You'll end up getting throttled. :p

Shocking news :( It’s not like VM are cheap!! They are nearly double the price of Be and various other ISPs.

Is this is true and they start throttling i shall be leaving them.

Again ive been with them years but over the past year its got crazy with STM's and now this..

Sigh...

These rumours are from someone who doesn't even work for VM.

Alex Brown as stated that this is false...so until I see some hard evidence I ain't gonna believe some forum post.

Of course, you realise, alex brown has been caught telling lies over and over..and over...and over...and over in the past, right? he said STM never even existed, do you remember that? he denied the trials were being run the first time round, then the second time round, then with the new stm...all denials, not gonna be implemented...then they sneakily updated the pages, if you trust alex your abit silly.

P.S Multiple VM staff/sources have reported this to be true, the trials are being run on the ex-telewest side right now..you can find staff over @ digitalspy who have also confirmed it.

Alas, that guy at cableforum has NEVER been wrong, not even once, everyone flamed him when he said upload stm was coming...alas it did, didnt it? same with the new stm...

Also, Alex is only head of STM trials, he wouldnt know much, if anything about this anyway.

Whilst it wouldn't surprise me too much if any ISP started using application throttling on certain ports there would be absolutely zero reason for any of them to do it specifically with gaming for two reasons.
1: Gaming doesn't use much bandwidth at all (even modern games with full voice comms don't use a great deal*).
2: It would drive away the casual net user who only uses it for gaming (PS3/360/wii/PC).

I can certainly see it possibly being used for torrents, newsgroups etc the same way STM does (but as less of a scattergun approach to traffic management).
STM was pretty much always going to come in at some point, and iirc was known about from trial areas for a while.

As i've said a few dozen times before, i'm not going to panic over rumours on forums about things - If I did I wouldn't ever be able to relax or enjoy my time online.
I stopped listening too hard to them after the first 3 or so years of playing UO and hearing it was going to be shut down with every patch/change in dev team, not to mention the number of times we were told NTL was going to impose a cap of 1gb of usage a day...

/goes off to bury head in the sand until there is something more concrete than chines whispers.

*Less than You tube, much less than downloading/torrents, probably about the same as online radio (so a couple of MB a minute..).
