Virgin are now going to use application throttling!!.

Yeah we're looking to move over to sky/.be for internet in the next few months. Just waiting on some money to be able to get a BT line in. Already have Sky TV & never had any problems with it unlike Digital TV from Virgin, Which I have in my room. 5 broken boxes later I've given up with it.

I used to praise Telewest, always recommended them. Now when people ask I tell them to steer clear!

Back on topic any way, I do believe this will come to light, just like many things Virgin have denied so far.

If your willing to get an 18 month contract for the phone line from BT (approx £11) month then they will install the line for £30. I know this as they just came and installed mine as i am changing from Virgin 20m to be

Sigh...

These rumours are from someone who doesn't even work for VM.

Alex Brown as stated that this is false...so until I see some hard evidence I ain't gonna believe some forum post.

Alex states a lot of things are false and they always turn out to be true in the long run with him looking mighty silly having to admit to things, till he does his little routine of deny, deny, run away from thread and then not answer anything for a week followed by "yes" "no" answers after that :p

And how do you know who i work for? you dont, nice assumption there.

Didnt know usenet had lots of linux distros to download :p seriously though if it happens on Virgin what makes you think it wont happen with other providers?

BT already use ALLOT (well, hardware associated with it anyway) as i'm sure if you know anyone on BT if they hit a limit they get shaped to pretty pathetic speeds.

VM already use ALLOT on their ADSL side to shape people down to 80Kbit/s for a full week if they use "too much bandwith".

And they use it to shape p2p etc on that side as well.

a lot of linux distros on usenet, lots and lots ;)

Because you have STATED that you are an EX VM employee numerous times on the newsgroups Darren, so that is no assumption on my part :p

That's nothing - I doubt you'll be even in the top 60% of users.

If they throttle Usenet surely they'll lose more or less every single one of the 20Mb subscribers?

I daubt that more or less every single one of the 20Mb subscribers uses usenet. Chances are there are lots of people simply not willing to pay the monthly cost of it, and so i think that more of the heavy downloaders are using torrents, not usenet.

virgin have free servers for usenet so I imagine a lot do use it.

I'm over with sky now so I miss my free servers hehe.

The throttling kicks in for anyone even if you aren't the top 5% of users, As soon as you hit that limit tough luck :)

People can argue with me all day long that it is only the top 5% that get it but this is not true! I have friends who barely use the web & get affected by the throttling.

Apparently DOCSIS3 will solve the overload on the network when they roll that out :) But who knows. All I know is since the re brand my connection has never been like it was when it was Blueyonder & I've had this connection for going on 4+ years, All problems started since the re brand to Virgin.

I couldn't agree more! I think it is quite disgraceful that Virgin would do this. I have been on "Blueyonder" for over 5 years. It was the greatest and fastest. Then Virgin took over and i've never experienced such bad speeds etc.

Most the time it even takes Vrgin minutes to load Google!

We are also moving to Sky as soon as possible. In my house we have 4 computers on the router. And 3 of the 4 computers are people in my family who like to play games like Half-Life 2 and Call of Duty, so when that peak limit kicks in on peak times (Which just so happen to be the best times for gaming) we have the privilege of being able to get over 1000 ping in games!

Blueyonder/Telewest were running STM trials long before the merger (18 months)

Telewest run the company now...and it's them who you can thank stupid STM limit for and the rather poor upload...

If your wondering why NTL never upgraded to docsis2 (allowing higher upload speeds, which users have wanted for a few years now) it was because most of the network was falling apart (that's what you get when u buy every cable company out to get a monopoly)

a lot of places now have pre-docsis3 (they are not going full docsis3;) ) with 10K upgrades (so some people should have seen speed increases just lately)

And the first rollout of 50Mbit starts in december, it only has 1.5Mbit upload though (May go to 2.5 before rollout) (Using sACKs for those interested, as you know, without it 1.77Mbit is the minimum upload speed required for 50Mbit downstream)

It had 6Mbit (was going to be 10) at the launch of the trials but they have opted for modems with no upstream bonding, they may or may not decide to look into higher upload speeds in 09 however.

Right now STM is set to launch along with 50Mbit, they are, however trying to decide if they want to charge a higher price and remove STM.

They already know this is supposed to be a premium product and as such will attract people who want high download and upload speeds, but with 1.5Mbit it's just not going to cut, especially when the people they are attracting already went to Be for higher up speeds.

I thought most people use usenet as a way to download less then legal files without your ISP or the copyright owners knowing. If you use virgins own servers then wouldnt that just be letting VM know you download copyrighted stuff?

And if you use usenet for purely legal stuff, then you proberly wont need 20Mb connection.

okay ive just today found out about this new 10-3 throttle time... and im absolutely fuming..

i get 14 hours a day unthrottled at best!!!

okay okay so APARENTLY im in the top 5% of users well i dont believe that for a start.. anyone with a 20MB connection WILL USE IT TO DOWNLOAD!!!!

50mb is a non starter as said above.. i mean on average i think were getting 10-13mbit throughout the day if we get throttled for 5 hours at each throttle point.

id much rather have my old 10meg back and download @ 10mbit ALL DAY EVERY DAY.

why introduce 20 if they are going to throttle to 5mbit?? i mean look at that table?
if everyone got throttled that would mean that they have on their network 1MB, 1MB, 2.5MB and 5MB customers.. i mean what the **** is that all about.. NO WAY do they need to throttle people that much to keep up with speed demands...

this country is an absolute joke. we should all pack up and move to sweeden with thier completely unlimited 100/100 service for like under £30..

anyway mini rant overwith. im looking into get a phone line and BE broadband this is a joke this.. OH and what is the UPLOAD all about?? as a gamer the upload KILLS my ping and gives me lag in games.... its just stupid.

they'll end up losing all their customers at this rate.

^^ Dont d/l loads in peak time then ya nubbin? STM is quite common knowledge know.

If they do start app throttling then BYE BYE VM! Especiall as I like usenet and the SSL it brings. Why pay for 20mb if basically your not allowed to use it for anything other then reading a forum. 20mb is really needed for that!

err you do realise the STM is now 10am-3pm then 4pm-9pm, right?

that's peak time?

You can only download overnight now and even then that has a 9GB limit in some trial areas.

Didnt someone calculate that you can still download over 100GB a day on 20Mb, even with the current STM. That should be enough for any legit user, and still reasonable for not legit users.
