Who has the best army in the world?

Would find it very difficult to get past the helicopters, plans, ships and submarines making up the fleet guarding the carrier though.

Even then it will take quite a bit more than a single torpedo to sink a aircraft carrier.

depends, if its a full on war, the helicopters will be too busy avoiding anti-aircraft guns, and the other ships supporting the aircraft carrier will be engaged in battle ect.... and also there is no gaurantee that our radar technology will pick up the enemy submarine, how do you know what cloaking/technology they have.

There are only 2 "blue water" navies in the world now - the US Navy and the Royal Nav(blue water navy means it has the capability to project power anywhere in the world)

All of that means little really because regardless of our spending if we had to go to war we wouldn't be able to get there without the yanks helping us.

Lets say the argies took the falklands back again. How would we get there? Beg and borrow from the yanks thats how. We couldn't even get our troops to iraq and afganistan in numbers without the yanks.

If the Argies took back the falklands it would take us two years to get the equipment together to go beat them off it again.

Our air force is little more than a joke. Most of the maintenance is done on civilian bases or farmed out abroad which really wouldn't help us during a war.

Our transport aircraft are in tatters (c130k and J), most are on the ground being repaired. Or we have the frankly laughable tristar which is currently having half a billion spent on it having glass cockpit upgrades despite the aircraft needing to be sent to the scrappy.

Yeah we spend a lot on the budget but not in a good way.

I don't think it's that bad, if the argies did retake falkands we could deffo kick them off again... their military is much much worse then it was back then. They don't even have a carrier anymore and have lost a lot of planes.

We have a proper helicopter carrier now (same size as our current CVS carriers). We have two landing ships still..

I think once the first super carrier comes online in next few years we suddenly become a major player again... thats if F35 ready in time :(

I'd say Israel in general. For their size, they take names and kick all kinds of ass. Simply out of sheer necessity for their survival in a region where practically everyone hates their mere existence. They might not have the most powerful hardware, or the most numerous troops, but they have the strength and tenacity to go on in what has to be the most hostile and unenviable circumstance on the global stage.

what are the odds an astute can get through the massive defense around the carrier, and even then they only need to sale a few hundred miles from new york to hit that type 45 with a missile, (and vis versa, but the cairrer group as more anti missile defense)

The Astute will be able to get through quite easily. It's extremely quiet and very undetectable. I was reading an article in the Times when the first Astute was launched. Something about on rader (or is that sonar?) the Astute would show up as invisible, or if it was close by, it would show up as a small sea animal.

The Type 45 wouldn't get hit again due to it's low visibilty. They are truly top notch stuff which is unmatched in any other armed forces.

People always bang the SAS drum but who hear really knows whether they are the best or just the usual media bull.

That's pretty laughable, study after study has shown the UK would be in a position to mount a similar operation to the Falklands conflict.

You would be suprised how quickly things get put back into active service when they are really required!!

Also, things are only getting better, with more Type 45s, the 2 new carriers, Astute subs etc for the Navy, Typhoon and new transport for the RAF etc etc

what anti air craft guns?

They will be flying in and around their own ships, are you talking about an entire fleet attacking the group not just one sub? Cause even then you will have lots of ships ping away active sonar so anything under the surface is going to show up pretty well + depth charges

Sailing into that much active sonar would make them pretty easy to spot along with all the other things the yanks could do from that many varied ships subs and aircraft, and even then how long would it take for the astute to cros the ocean, when the type 45 and the carrier group could already be exchanging cruise missiles, shortly after leaving port.

Agreed. When talking radar/sonar, you really cannot beat British technology on the subject.

china id guess. and theyre mostly ready to go rather than been stuck in the middle east somewhere getting shot at

China have poor equipment and no real way of projecting it outside their own regions.

Do you not thing if the UK were attacked properly, as in naval or air force, everything would come back from the middle east ;)

Hezbollah have the best army, :D I remember when Israel invaded, They pushed them off, even only numbering around 10,000 total soldiers in the whole of Lebanon! And Israel invaded with a lot more!

I think what you fail to realise is the Yanks' detection equipment is quite old. It dates back to the Cold War. Ours on the other hand has just come into service.

we've now got higher then sas havent we now? can remember reading a massive article about them but i cant remember the name of the squad, there a small squad what doesn't take order's from anyone other than england

where as the sas have to take orders from the US in places like iraq/afgan

ill look it up in a bit, unless someone else decides to find it

Ok then I worked at an airport for next to 17 years at a base that looked after the C130's and Tristar I know the state they are in. You can drive past Marshall aerospace in cambridge right now and see how many C130's are in work. They are junk. Even the new J is useless. The pilots hate them. The tristar is maintained by gamco now outside the uk. Lyneham used to look after the c130. If we went to war now with a conflict like the falklands we no longer have the numbers in the RAF (engineers) to maintain these aircraft who are well trained. They have all be made redundant and the bases closed.

The civilians at marshalls maintaining these aircraft have no desire to go to war or work through the night for a war effort.

As I say how exactly would we get our numbers to the falklands without american help if we had to do it all over again? Wait for the A400m to come online in about another 10 years at the current rate. A400m another pile of junk. Like the C130J who in the hell thinks of using composite when your going to have to do rough landing strips.
