Who has the best army in the world?

Irish Rangers beat the SAS and US special forces in annual combat exercises more then once through the last few years.

Ok then I worked at an airport for next to 17 years at a base that looked after the C130's and Tristar I know the state they are in. You can drive past Marshall aerospace in cambridge right now and see how many C130's are in work.

2 or 3 when I last looked.

No one ever mentions the SBS, who are easily as good as the SAS at what they do.

No-one knows anything about them though, remember, very few people had heard of the SAS until that embassy seige, live TV kind of meant they were put into the public domain.

Every time the SAS come up, my dad recounts the story where when he was watching it on the news, he thought the people in black masks (SAS) were the terrorists :p

US Marines get issued a card telling them not to gamble, drink, or fight with British soldiers, as they will lose! Started in WW2, and they still get 'em in Iraq nowadays. Kinda puts the UKLF ahead of the yanks. Also, the yanks think that the Royal Irish are SF, thanks to the colour of the berets.

Biggest = China
Best equipped = US
most elite troops? - UK/Auz/NZ/Canada/US

Aus/NZ/& Canada all follow the UK system tbh... & soldiers are given a bit more responsibility earlier and more emphasis place on using their own initiative. US troops seem to be more officer led and micro managed whereas with the UK junior NCOs take greater responsibility. Both UK and US have elite units and they work together fairly closely tbh...

link?

sounds like bull **** to me tbh.. as I doubt many UK or US SF units have had much time to mince about entering 'competitions' in the last few years

Do you seriously believe that? Because if so than that is a serious insult to the rest of humanity.

personally i think the israeli army is the best in the word at the minute. unfortunately they have the experience. as regards the western nations such as britain usa canada australia and new zealand theyre learning the dirty art of guerilla warfare in places like iraq and afghanistan. the ordinary infantry units of theese countrys arent really capable of this type of warfare.except maybe the british with their experience in northern ireland, the british army seems to concentrate more on winning over the people as do us special forces be they green berets or navy seals. theese type of troops amalgamate with the local people to form organised units capable of carrying out major operations. while unfortunately the top brass still prefer the heavy approach.

There are significantly less than 250,000 people in the (entire) British Military now.
The Air Force is currently at about 40,000! Its halved in the last 10-12 years.

The saying goes that our US colleagues "Have all the gear, but no idea"!

Hey -

Now before anyone attempts to answer, please don't let politics get involved in the thread...

This question is really several in one I guess:

Who has the largest army?

Who has the most advanced equipment (weapons, tanks, planes whatever)

Who has the most elite troops ? (I have heard it is either the UK SAS, the US or the Israel Mossad... no idea if that is true!)

This is just a "I am curious thread" not for anything in particular :)

largest = china
largest paramilitary =iran
most advanced = USA
most elite = delta force/seals/SAS cant say for sure

Im pretty sure switzerland has a pretty massive army.

That has to be the biggest laugh. A bunch of yoddlers who sat on the fence for 2 world wars and sat and watched while Europe was disintegrating, then used as a store for the plunders of Nazi gold. I have no respect for the Swiss as a nation, people, or army.

As for the best armed forces its ours (British) imo no one else comes close.

Well you would be badly mistaken. At any one time there are 15-20 in maintenance there. The fleet is in such a poor state Marshalls stopped doing any civilian work and excluding citations only does C130's maintenance and Tristar modifications. It's the reason myself and 70 other licensed engineers bailed out.

Your counting the ones you can see in bit's around the airfield not the 15-20 inside the hangers.

As I said our spending is not going in the right direction, think of what thats costing to keep those old piles of junk flying. Almost every 4 years they are completely stripped and rebuilt. They are corroded to ****.
