NV to ATI who is gonna jump?

Does the GTX+ reach/excede the GT260 performance, out of interest?

No it's not, nV is releasing it to combat with 4850 in the mid range bracket. But if you look at 4850's price/performance ratio and it is just as fast 260 in some benchmarks then the choice is obvious.

Ed i think you'll find a lot of people made their choice not just because of the cards but things like drivers and the nvidia attitude in general thats what it was for me the 4xxx being so good is a bonus really.

Really impressed with the 4850's performance, looking at the benchmarks below shows what overpriced kit the 260 is when compared the 4850, i cant see the GTX+ beating the 4850 on initial benchmarks.

everyone seems to be going to ati, u think nvidia will see that they have to release a really good card and a good price now? to win their customers back?

because if they carry on like this they will only have enthusiasts left, who have the money to spend.

They are releasing cards to try to win customers back, they are relaunching their 8800 GT and 9800 GTX. :D

tbh I still think that the 4850 will be the better card if you like AA.

I am playing CoD4 1680x1050 everything maxed, 16xAF and 8xAA and average between 90-105fps depending on the map. I had a 8800GTS 512mb @ well over 800mhz and 2.3ghz shaders...so around what the 9800GTX+ is except for memory bandwidth....and didn't get anywhere near that performance....

Well i'm in a real quandary. Never really be affiliated to either ATI or Nvida, my first GPU was a GF2 Ultra, my second an ATI Radeon9800pro. Basically i go for best price/performance ratio for my budget (and usually stretching it).

Unfortunately towards the end of my 9800pro life, ATI released a new control panel thingy in .net, that had horrendous performance issues on my machine. Often taking 30 seconds or longer just to open and causing the PC start up to take much longer. It was so bad I reverted back to the old control panel for many months.

When it final died I got a GF6800nu (best APG card i could get at the time) and that was a breathe of fresh air, so much quicker and easier to use. From that day,or rather the day that ATI stopped supporting their old control panel, i vowed never to buy ATI again, not out of principle, just that i never wanted to have to go through the same thing again.

However now it looks like the best value/performance for my new system is going to be a 4850 or maybe 4870, unless i can wait it out for nvidia price drops and the difference isn't too great.

As i said , difficult decision, i'm not really a fan of either company, its just that nvidia haven't annoyed me as much as ATI have in the past.
So I'm pondering do I go for best value/performance (ATI) or stick with what i know works well with me (nvidia), decisions, decisions. At this rate i'll never get a new system ;)

Looks like I'll jump ship, the new ATI cards seem to just pip my beast of a 7800GT on a few benchmarks :D:p

I desperately need a new card and the price of the 4850s are just too good to leave it any longer.

I quite liked ATi's control panel back when I was using my Radeon X1650 Pro. Can't really remember what it was like when I had a Radeon 9250, though. I don't really use the control panel often enough to care, though.

240 can get you Xfire 3850's beating the GTX280 in some games.

Thats the point!

A good point, but I wouldn't get the 3850's for a list of reasons that are well known to dual GPU configs. Are you saying that you would still buy CF 3850's over a GTX 280 at £250?

Well there's not much of a better way to make comparisons, especially when its the GTX280 that's involved. A lot of people think it's totally pointless because you can get better performance for less price (half price in fact). So of course a card's price will determine if it's 'good' or 'bad' if you can get the same performance with a solution that's half price. Price determines almost everything. When it comes to value, that is largely based on opinion + cost of product.

I think we're saying the same thing. My point is that some people were calling the GTX 280 a bad card, when it really isn't, it's just the price is too high for most people to consider it.

Again, at £250 (or whatever amount you want) it starts to look like a 'good' card.

Get me one for £250 and I'll take if off your hands. Until then I don't want to pay the current GXT280 price when the 4870 for half that price will get me 80-90% (educated guess) of that performance. Are you seriously suggesting we shouldn't take the price into account? :D

No, not at all - exactly the opposite! You missed my point completely.

PS. For £250, I wouldn't be selling it to anyone :p

me jumping ship :p buying one this week is the Gigabyte Radeon 4850 512MB

is it a decent one, cooling etc? do you get any games with it?

these fine with pci 1.0a?

only thing is i have a 3800x2 at stock at 1600x1200 res will this bottleneck much thanks.

I'm tempted, but as I'm pondering the 4870X2 there is simply no way I'll be buying until it has been out for at least a month and had one month's driver revisions in place.

Not yet but when I need to replace my 8800GTX I may go ATI at that time if theres a right card for me, main reason being Nvidia's driver support and releases are shambolic

do the unthinkable and choose a lower non-native res. i've had to do that since i got a 22in 1680x1050 screen a few weeks back. i only have a 256mb 3850 so i just play a few games at 1280x800. they look and perform great. in a blind test, i'm not sure many people would be able to tell the difference. :p

That's what i'm doing, the panel actually scales down to 1680x1050 pretty well.;) But can't wait to see what the 4870 can do:D

Very probably - shockingly good performance for the price, and a definite improvement over my 8800GTS 320MB.

The only thing holding me back is that I want to see how they price the 4870's.

I cant wait to jump ship.

This 8800GTS has been awful :(

Is there any point to getting the 1gig card over the 512cards? (i game @ 1920x1600 btw)
