Steal a Bentley, make 3 police cars crash and what do you get...?

One of the girls - who admitted taking a vehicle without consent, dangerous driving, driving without a licence and burglary - was told she would be automatically banned for 12 months should she ever apply for a driving licence.

Im sure im not the only one who thinks this is a pointless punishment? If shes stolen a car and is quite happy to drive it without a licence etc what good is banning her for 12 months if she ever bothers to apply for one going to do? Its along the same ridiculous path as increasing the legal age of smoking to 18 and the possibility of rasing the legal drink age to 21. If a 14/15 year old is already smoking and drinking under the legal age whats slapping an extra few years on the legal limit actually going to achieve. Its just one stupid initiative after another, still why bother to try to solve problems when its almost guaranteed your not going to be in power after the next election.

Which bit of "detention and training order" is "no sentence at all"?
"Detention" = Custody.
"Training"= post release supervision.

So where is the problem?

Well they must have thought about that in 1997 because most crime initiatives that Labour have introduced or meddled with have failed.

Tough on crime - tough on the causes of crime ? I don't think so.

So the police shouldn't chase criminals then?

If they crash whilst running from the police, it's their own fault.

Nope, get a helicopter to follow them overhead - being chased by cars they will go much faster and take more risks, then just pop their tyres somewhere.

Maybe I should have been clearer and stated it's not "much" of a sentence. By saying no sentence at all I was stating that it wasnt worthy. I'd hardly call that punishment.

i watched some traffic police progam last week and felt sick afterwards

worst punishment on the whole show was 100 hours community service and he was a 17/18yr old whos nicked a car then led the police on a 2 hour chase. it was one of many offence hed done over the last few years

then there was a lad driving with just a provisional. 6 people in his car. no insurance...... 3 points

it made me wonder why as a young driver im paying all this money for insurace, tax , license when i can "twock" a car and only get a few points and a small fine at worst :(

We don't know what the sentence was; a detention and training order can last for 2 years ie 12 months inside; is that not much of a sentence?

The justice system in this country is pathetic. The judges often say things like "This is totally unforgivable", or "The crimes you have committed are completely inhumane", or even "You should be made to serve proper time for your wrong-doing".

The sentences they give them after these dramatic speeches? Nothing short of pathetic.

I suggest to ease prision overcrowding, anyone in for heinous crimes such as murder, rape, child molestation, sadism etc shall all be withdrawn from the prison they are currently in, loaded onto a cattle truck, then dumped into Eastcroft Incinerator. En masse. This might serve as a future deterrent.

Also, all the little cushy luxuries of prisons such as TV's in each cell, radios, games console, Sky+ etc shall be confiscated immediately and distributed as gifts among the police force, who put in quite an effort on our behalf to rid the streets of these useless, oxygen-theiving plebs.

All prisoners should be made to serve community service, at least 24 hours a week. No prisoners should be allowed to file lawsuits against the justice system beacuse they were offended by what they were given to eat, wear, use etc. All prisoners are to be exempt from any protection under the Human Rights Act and forbidden from appealing in any way.

My two penneth.

Labour have introduced over 300 criminal offences since they took power and knew that this would result in an increased prison population. What did they do to address this ? Nothing. They are only now building more prisons because the other alternatives of not jailing dangerous people or letting them out early, well, doesn't work.

How do we pay for this ? Well if increased prison spaces and dangerous people off the street meant a penny on my income tax then crack on.

Include the 300+ stealth tax increases behind the scenes bumped up by the Chancelor since NuLabour and you'll soon realise why they can't up income tax... particularly after the 10p debacle.

Helicopters aren't always available...

It's also much easier to get away from a helicopter if ground units are miles away 'following from a safe distance'.

The vehicle will also know that there is a helicopter following them, so probably won't stop, and the fuel in the car will last longer than the fuel in the helicopter...

I think the perfect punishment for the little ****'s (and other criminals) is to stick 'em on the front line in Afghanistan, i bet that'd be enough of a deterrent :D

If I was them that would not be enough of a deterrent, or did you mean stick them on the front line with no weapons? Just there for em to be shot? That would be good punishment.

I hope they're cannon fodders for the frontline troops to move ahead. If you put them in the frontline, they might start shooting our own because they got bored and the lack of sense to Right and Wrong.

Rip sky TV/comforts out of prisons
Build more prisons with bare essentials like it used to be
Fling any criminal for even a minor offence (such as this) in prisons.

Sorted :D

Just curious which prisons you've been in? The one I visited (for work) the other week certainly didn't have Sky TV, in fact it was pretty grim to be honest. I think the best cell I saw had an old ghetto blaster in it.

I'm sure that you already know that police usually have to share one helicopter between several forces (like Bristol and Gloucester do) and that it costs around £1500 just to get it up in the air. Additionally I'm sure that you know that the new rules forbid the police to just deploy the stinger just anywhere, they have to be behind a solid object such as a concrete structure. With those facts in mind you might want to rethink your strategy.
