Surely with all these people not in jail the cost, in damages, benefits(lets be honest, highly likely for a lot of them) treatment to other injured parties to police, or the people mugged and so on. Surely its cheaper to build a new prison and stick them in rather than anything else.
100 security guards paid to keep all these criminals in a safe, secure place so innocent "good" people aren't in danger, and surely if they are all out on the streets and extra 100 policeman will be needed to constantly chase them down to prevent crimes but with lots of collateral damage aswell.
Its as simple as this, we ALL know crimes are going on, crime stats are going down, the government know why. People report crimes less as theres little evidence, witness intimidation and little being done to those found guilty anyway, of which most people aren't found guilty. Theres simply little point to report most crimes anymore as its more trouble than its worth. This works for the government as they can claim crime is down, nice campaign slogan. Why, someone answer me, why does the government build more prisons, if crime isn't increasing, theres simply not a single reason at all they can answer that question without admiting crime is up, and quite significantly. That is why prisons don't get built. Think of all the people who deal with the criminals while they are out on the street, police, public defenders, etc, etc, etc, the benefits they get, the housing, and the collateral damage. THe argument we don't have the money to build more jails is ridiculous on sooooo many levels, its FAR more expensive to have them on the street. however building prisons means admiting the country is getting worse, crime is up, the subculture of criminals is getting larger and worse. Its all crap, people that break the law should be in jail , for serious crimes like murder and rape, in jail for a long time, mostly for life and thats simply not happening.
