first 4870 review

Interesting, if accurate. What interests me most is how this is a 512 MB card and not 1 GB (Which there will surely be, since there are 1 GB 4850's). I'm hoping a 1 GB version will be even better at high resolutions.

Liking what I see so far!

Those temps look high, 92 degrees under load, 79 idle, aftermarket cooler required I would say ;)

Wish I understood how sites come up with such bizarre power consumption figures, I'm sure they're including the monitor or something. They've got HD 3870 using 161 W idle / 282 W load when from all the numbers I've looked at it uses less than my 8800 GT, and my system uses 99 W idle / 190 W load.

that's not high at all, my 8800GT reaches almost 90 degrees loaded (CPU is 45 under 100% load during this time) so totally a non issue.

Well yeah but that's why mine has a VF900 on (on min fan speed) and tops out at 60 :) (45 idle)

they are up on US retailers from $310-$330 (ones I found).

No way will they be £260, if so I'll just pick them up next time I am in USA.

In which case ATI have rasied the price slightly then as the 512Mb were meant to be $299 and the 1gb version $329.

Guess they can considering the performance.

Still will make them under £200 once the initially rush has settled down like the 8800GT days.

Or rather the retailers are setting the price.

With ATI/AMD trying to delay the 4850 to try and keep prices competitive to me it would seem the last thing they intend is to be labelled as price gaugers

Hopefully with this and other etailers having the 4870 in stock maybe they have enough supplied to not cause too much of a price increase at launch (i hope)

Mine is the same temps wise when idle too so dunno what you mean :p it's only almost 90 under full load but very briefly because the moment the fan spins down when not loaded temps drop instantly so thermal control is very good and the 8800GT doesn't even have a heatpipe like the 4870!

Very, very nice stuff. The 4850 is still actually the best bang for buck looking at the first benchmark from the OP, but ATi still demolish nVidia. Lets hope nVidia don't give us a headache by making their prices EXACTLY the same as the ATI cards. But then again the 4870 is so strong that it would have to be the GTX 260 they'd lower to such a price, which is nearly impossible due to its expensive production. :D

i still want more info on the 4870X2 i see that a certain review site removed there page and pics they had of the black PCB black cooler one.
