first 4870 review

Well if nvidia do price-match (lol i really don't think this will happen)

I would rather give ati my money this time around

Nvidia have held back on driver fixes (fact) for mainly the 8 series cards in what can be seen as an attempt to force card upgrades ;)

Now ati so it seems do more driver updates in an attempt to gain performance where possible and to fix problems

And with roughly equatable performance/costs (maybe but not equal) nvidia's hold on pricing will have to ease up making for more competition in the market place

Go ati go

What's hilarious is the 4870 X2 part. Even if nVidia did counter it with a GTX280 GX2 or whatever it wouldn't be consistently faster and would cost significantly more to produce. Good times for ATi.

Lets hope nVidia don't give us a headache by making their prices EXACTLY the same as the ATI cards.

even if they did i'd still go ATI they deserve this one and the boost they get from it will be good for us in the long run which ever company we buy from.

time for nvidia to get a kick up the backside.

Im going to buy 4870X2 cards when they come out now, the price of the GTX280 has lost them my vote.

Mine is the same temps wise when idle too so dunno what you mean :p it's only almost 90 under full load but very briefly because the moment the fan spins down when not loaded temps drop instantly so thermal control is very good and the 8800GT doesn't even have a heatpipe like the 4870!
Load is what matters and 30 degrees is a huge delta. I'm thinking mainly about overclocking potential (plus lifespan is another minor potential issue with those temps). There was a mass rush to replace 8800 GT coolers here when everyone saw the temps and the same is likely with 4850/4870 IMO.

I don't see why there was a mad rush, the issues seen only affected certain brands and my 8800Zotac GT OC is stillon the revision 1 cooler and I have had it since release day no issues whatsoever even overclocked further.

I have been thinking the same thing as when a new ATI card gets close to a Nvidia equivalent all of a sudden they have new drivers in no time meaning that they already had them before hand & hold on to them for a new range with INF only for the new range that ppl mod down & will only ever get officially released for the older range because ati had caught up.

Not far off what Creative did with the Xf-i range a while ago for vista.

for some some reason google does not translate pages 11 and above anyone has the problem ? how can i translate it ?

edit :OMG this card is a beast the more aa and af you trow at it and it does not scale back at all , NOT like nvidia drops performance massively when u put loads aa/af. and 4870 it just keeps fighting , u trow in high res and its still going .

it seams the bigger res u use and more aa and af then it comes after gt280. i bet lack of memory it just punishing it would be interesting to see what 1gig version can do in high resolutions and loads of aa should be even closer to gt280. and i just can imagine what 4870x2 will bring

Final8y,

Yeah that's the main reason i wanted to go back with ati

Won't make a difference myself just going back to ati but reading between the lines there are many who feel nvidia have been milking them with lack of driver fixes when in reality they seem to of had these at hand :(

Hopefully they may learn a lesson but i doubt it

Anyways ........... I hope when these launch at OcUK i have time to pop to the shop n spend spend spend he he
