Hi all,

I quite fancy a "hot hatch" for my next car, but unsure what to look for... No criteria though, just something that is reliable :p, and *hopefully* wont cost too much extra on insurance

I will have around £1k to spend on one, its either a hot hatch or just get a MK2 Mondey Ghia X. I will be looking to get one in the next few months, I will have had my licence for around 4 months by that time

Hot hatch for £1k? That doesn't fall apart within a month? Good luck. :D

I honesty can't think of much for that money that would be considered "hot" and a "hatch". Maybe a dog-rough Saxo VTR? That is most certainly not hot though.

Dont think you have to log into see that but thats good only really bad bit is the back arches. Its a lot for a J plate clio in most peoples eyes. Recent engine rebuild too so it shouldnt give any problems as with most cars unless driven like a complete tool. Reliablilty wise its a gamble I drove mine for three weeks and in that time i had to replace my gearbox and clutch!

Theyre extremely fun cars and will do 0 to 60 in 7 seconds

Insurance wise expect the worst!

Honda Civic 1.8 Vti? 167bhp and generally bulletproof. :)

One of my mates bought my dads old P plate 120,000 mile one off him 2 years ago, it's never been serviced since, only had the oil topped up, he thrashes it everywhere, and it's still going strong!

It doesn't have to be a hot hatch, but I would like a car which is fun to drive and is quick(ish) the mondeo I don't find fun in the slightest :p

The Puma looks OK, might have to have a butchers, I also thought 205 GTI, but I think they are a little bit too basic, if you know what I mean :p

I was looking at XR2i's XR3i's RS Turbos (no chance on the insurance front :() Golf GTI's etc, but they are all a bit rough for the prices!

On a different turn I was looking at E30 Bimmers too, but I think they might cost a lot of money for day to day running

Mk2 Golf is the obvious choice, look a the next size up and you can get ST mondeo's.

Personally I'd up my budget and find a 306 s16

another vote for the Clio 16v - reasonably quick and quite good through the twisties! :D

£1000 should give you a bit of choice, just make sure you don't buy a lemon. I bought one for £400ish and all it needed was a new clutch (on 130k though) and it still kicks ass on airfield days! :D

from a recent airfield day with some other ocuk'ers

you get nice wide arches and a bonnet bulge to boot too! :D

the community is very good which I like. It's a straight swap for the 2.0 williams engine if you need more go and the williams wider track can bolt on too, giving very highly regarded handling!

strip it out and you'd have a very formidable track car!

Zing! Spot on.
