Can The 4870 Handle Medieval 2: Total War?

The game is also very CPU intensive... there are lots of CPU calculations (especially whenthere's hundreds of units on screen) going on and adding shadows etc can bring a machine running it to its knees regardeless of GPU.

True but I'm running at 3.4Ghz which should be ample for this game. I'm quite sure the graphics card is the bottleneck as I downclocked the CPU and the performance was the same.

Disable shadows and tweak the settings more... it will run smoother. The game is not reliant on GPU power as much as it is CPU power from what i've seen.

for the love of god, people saying there not getting crysis until hardware catches up cause it runs crap, lower resolution a bit and your away, i mean how hard is that?

I can get it running perfectly smooth by lowering various settings.

But the point of this topic is to discover if the 4870 can handle the game at extreme settings. I don't mind lowering some, but I would like high AA and high shadow quality at least. This is something my 8800GTX fails to achieve.

Why should I buy it now? I still haven't played through many great FPS such as Bioshock, STALKER, Half-Life 2 etc. I only buy FPS games when I can get them for £5 (I got all the above at that price), considering there are so many produced all the time. I can run all those games I mentioned close to the very highest settings at constant 60FPS. By the time I want to play Crysis, I will be able to do the same for that game too.

Also, I like to run all my games at my native resolution of 1920x1080 if possible. When you are playing on a 40" screen, you notice turning down the resolution and settings more than a 24" or smaller monitor.

With the settings you want and the res you play at, you are not going to get 50-60 fps on today's hardware in that game, sorry. Well, at least not in big battles you won't.

the card is fine...

but IMO, medevil 2 sucks....

try this.. rome total war + babarian invasion. then install the mod called imperator 2. 100 times better and graphics/skins are very nice also

I suspect as much, but I would still be interested to see benchmarks/people's experience.

I have a feeling the 4870x2 will be up to the task, at least.

I'm planning to get into the Rome games at some stage.

What does that mod do and why do you think Medieval 2 sucks?

medieval sucks because too many crazy characters in the campaign map, secondly and most importantly in battles, the units for example, guns really destroy the game, theres no skill in having 10 units of gunmen etc, its totally annoying mixed in with normal troops.

the chavalry charges dont work well, the engine i think for rome is better, they move faster and hit better. in MED 2 you have to line them up forever, and even then sometimes it doesnt work

Imperator 2 is very good

its very very hard, the AI is smarter and there are 22 types of legionnarie available, EG Legio I Italica - Recruited from among the citizens all over Italy
* Legio II Augusta - Recruited from the former Carthaginian province

read the link for more info + download links ( you must have barbarian invasion installed)

EDIT: here i have uploaded 3 screenshots of imperator , on my Xfire profile, feel free to add me and talk about it :D

HardOCP used to use Medieval II in their benchmark suite. Unfortunately they don't anymore. Here was the last video card review I recall seeing with it in: http://www.hardocp.com/article.html?art=MTI5MywxMCwsMjA=

It's a shame that most sites video card reviews are almost completely dominated by shooters. Some people do play other games y'know...

Edit: Thinking about it, they've probably dropped it because of the way they do their reviews. HardOCP look for the highest 'playable' settings in a gameplay situation. As they found that they were happy with the experience with game settings maxed and some AA at 1920x1200 (on a 320MB 8800GTS), they may have decided it wasn't worth including for reviews of faster cards.

I honestly can't tell the difference once you get over x4 AA. Well - maybe if you show me enlarged still shots but not while playing a game.

Thanks for your opinion and info. Personally Medieval 2 seems great to me so far, but I'll check out Rome someday too. :)
