Soul Calibur IV requires 8.5GB discspace

i think its because blu-ray drive is very slow compare to dvd drive,
correct me if im wrong?

It's not very slow compared to the dvd drive. Someone done a great post on here about the actual drive speeds.

Although i think 8.5gb is aload of nonsense, the full game can't be much more than that (especially if it is coming on 1 DVD-9 for the 360, which iirc only has 7 or 8GB of usable space)

Harddrives are faster than disk drives, if the 360 has a harddrive in every unit developers would use installs too. While the blu-ray drive is slower for loading, it isn't dire enough to not be able to play a game without any installs (Drakes fortune runs perfectly without an install).

Ughh please do your research. Blu-rays rated 2x is near a DVD-ROM at 10x.

Yep but the advantage to Blu-Ray is it has the same read speed all across the board, whereas a 12x DVD drive is merely peak speed - the majority of the disc will be read much slower than 12x.

Mandatory installs for most multiplatform games doesn't seem like an advantage.

Many people would prefer it over a 50db DVD drive - I'd guess even some 360 fans would want the option in their favourite games, using GTA4 as example I'd take a 10min one-time install over 4mths of constant noise while playing.

A 250GB HD can be had for less than £50 so space isn't an issue.

Buying a bigger HDD is a solution to the problem, but it doesn't take away the fact that the problem exists.

I didn't have a problem with the noise while playing GTA IV or any other 360 game for that matter, but then I sit more than a foot away from the 360 and like to have the sound on while playing games. :p

That's what I was thinking. Why would a fighting game need installing?
Surely loading the stages and characters is enough. If games like Call of Duty 4 can be played without installing, then having to on Soul Calibur IV seems like poor coding on capcoms behalf.
Does this version still have the single-player adventure mode thingy though? Maybe they've gone to town on a souped-up new version of that.

The crazy thing is that I don;t think the SP mode is in the game (I was reading it was an arcade port so may not have the extra options the home ports had).

Bizarre, anyway the game is out today isn't it?

That's the one. :)

As for buying a bigger HDD, people already shell out enough money on the PS3, they shouldn't need to buy a bigger HDD too.

So much for the PS3 being an all in one package with having to buy bigger HDD, DS3's, memory card readers and PS2's. It's very clever of sony to offer a lot initially then take it away a bit at a time. :)

Ehhh? I think you're getting it mixed up with the version of Soul Calibur that will appear on Xbox Live Arcade.
