All New Summer 2008 Transfer Merry Go Round/Rumour Mill

I love the media:

http://www.channel4.com/sport/football_italia/jul2n.html

It is reported that 20-year-old Bendtner is eager to leave the Gunners so that he can play more first team football.

Milan would give him the opportunity to gain experience in Serie A and rejuvenate the squad, which already has young forwards Alexandre Pato, Marco Borriello and Alberto Paloschi.

Bendtner's agent Nicola Juric is expected in Italy over the next few days, but the Rossoneri face competition from Roma for the Dane.

So Milan want Bendtner now, and his 'agent' Nicola Juric, hold on, stop the press, As far as I'm aware his father is his agent.

Even better:

So only a day later the same website he has a different agent?!

The Media and agents = Cashley **** Arsenal 25th Best ever player nominated by morons.

YEah, I don't even see why he makes the Arsenal line up most of the time!

He's decent, still young and offers a complete different attack option for Arsenal, hence why he's scored a few 90th min goals, especially heading wise.

Chelsea apparently wanted him last season too.

15M

Bring in Sidwell

10m left over.

Nice

Exactly what I said several pages ago - and I still think Sidwell will end up the better player :)

IF AV rejected £17m for Barry then I personally think they are idiots - if however they have rejected £15m then its more marginal (but I would still sell taking into consideration the attitude of the player) - obviously this depends if the sums mentioned are cash upfront -which is unlikely (as Liverpool reportedly only have smaller amounts to spend so far) - or how much the addons are

AV would be very lucky to get £14m cash + £3m addons (obviously players in part x -which AV probably wouldnt want anyway, MIGHT change this)

it's a mystery to me also, good in the air but what about the rest???

gives the ball away way too often and seems a bit clueless a lot of the time - defenders seem to read him pretty easily.

If this so called £17m for Barry has been rejected then I think Liverpool should start looking elsewhere. Barry would be an excellent signing but I don't want Liverpool to pay over the top for him especially when our transfer budget is still to be decided.

I'd rather pay that for a 22 year old who has many years ahead and the posiblility of a profit if they decided to leave whereas Barry is heading into his prime but in 2-3 years time when he heads for 30, that great Player may start to slow down and we will have to go and fork more millions on a replacement.

O'Neil said weeks ago that Barry can go if Liverpool match Villa's price, Liverpool know what that price is and they're just sodding Villa about by continually offering less than that. The only people who are holding up this transfer is Liverpool! Give Villa what they want (18 million) and the whole thing will be done and dusted.

Yea and it's not like a club to initially ask for far more that what they would realistically take is it?

seems to be the going rate for a British midfielder - and Liverpool are losing out slightly (as in being asked to pay a little more) because the two clubs are in direct competition

If selling club where asking for well above going rate, then a "reduction"/reduced fee would be understandable

Dont personally think it is in this instance

A few of the new players you mentioned came from the premiership didnt they (so they had EPL experience - which is what you may miss this season esp if Lampard and Drogba go)

Nope, none of them had any PL experience whatsoever:
Cech, Ferreira, Robben, Kezman, Drogba, Tiago & Carvalho and that team was simply awesome that year as all the records show:)

From the BBC:

Barcelona are set to increase their offer for Arsenal striker Emmanuel Adebayor. (The Guardian)

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is leading the chase for Russia and Zenit St Petersburg playmaker Andrei Arshavin. (The Sun)

But Arshavin is actually on his way to Chelsea, who have had a bid accepted by Zenit and the player is now London-bound to hold personal talks. (Daily Mirror)

Chelsea have offered Frank Lampard £140,000 a week to try to persuade the midfielder to reject Inter Milan's advances and sign a new deal. (Daily Express)

It's a typically busy summer at Stamford Bridge with the club's board being told to sell striker Didier Drogba by new manager Luiz Felipe Scolari. (The Sun)

Scolari also wants to offer Florent Malouda to Barcelona as part of a deal to sign striker Samuel Eto'o from the Nou Camp outfit. (The Sun)

Fulham have stepped up their interest in signing Reading's Dave Kitson after striker Diomansy Kamara's long-term injury setback. (The Sun)

Switzerland forward Hakin Yakin is also in the frame to join Fulham and could again link up with Craven Cottage boss Roy Hodgson after they previously worked together at Grasshoppers. (Daily Mail)

Portsmouth will make a final £10m bid for Liverpool striker Peter Crouch. (Daily Mirror)

After missing out on midfielder Jonas Gutierrez, Pompey have now switched their attention to luring Shaun Wright-Phillips from Chelsea. (Daily Star)

Premier League new boys Hull want to take striker Georgios Samaras on loan from Manchester City for the season. (Daily Mirror)

Blackburn midfielder David Bentley still wants to leave the club after new boss Paul Ince failed to convince him to stay. (Daily Mirror)

Ince also faces a tough task keeping hold of giant centre-back Christopher Samba, who is a target for Manchester City boss Mark Hughes. (Daily Star)

Bolton are waiting on an answer as they attempt to sign midfielder Simon Vukcevic from Sporting Lisbon. (Daily Mirror)

Manchester United have offered assistant manager Carlos Quieroz a pay rise to turn down the job of Portugal national team coach. (Various)

But Quieroz is inclined to accept the post in a move which could damage United's hopes of keeping Portuguese winger Cristiano Ronaldo. (Various)

Ronaldo's possible switch to Real Madrid could be scuppered if he needs to undergo ankle surgery. (Various)

Republic of Ireland boss Giovanni Trapattoni says Tottenham striker Robbie Keane would benefit from joining Liverpool. (Various)

Sunderland's desire to sign Spurs striker Darren Bent are not as advanced as believed with the clubs wide apart in their valuation of the player. (The Independent)

And for the record I agree with the majority here that they're replacing Alonso with a far inferior player.... Rafa's dodgy transfer dealings continue into another summer :p
That's the problem, Barry isn't worth £18m. I can only assume O'Neil is asking for it because that's was we paid for Mascherano(24), but the expected fee for Alonso(26) is £15m. I don't rate Barry as highly as ether Mascherano or Alonso so if they won’t accept less than £18 then I'd rather stick with Alonso and leave Villa with a player than no longer wants to play for the club. I think Villa need to get real about his valuation, ManU paid £18m for Carrick last year when he was 25, and he’s abetter player imo, and he came from a bigger club. If Barry was 25-24 maybe he's worth £18m maximum, but not any more.

Ok fair enough - still believe this season will be a lot harder than the one you mentioned (Kezman and Tiago hardly played for you didnt they?)

Aston Villa are demanding a high price because they'd've quite liked to keep hold of Barry... and Liverpool might be willing to pay such a high price because they feel Barry is the perfect player to work with Gerrard. Sure, he might not be worth that much, or be better than a list of other players, if you look at it in one way... but if you think that he might fit perfectly in the jigsaw then maybe it's worth paying a premium?

Totally agree.

FYI we paid £16.6m - I seem to recall - for Carrick two seasons ago from Spurs and around £18m for Owen Hargreaves last summer from Bayern :)
It looks like Spurs might land David Bentley for £12m as well. I think Liverpool should tell Villa where to go. We don't need Barry imo, we're not short of centre mids. Its creative players, wingers and strikers we need. I've never understood the desire to buy Barry.
