Just a warning to anyone purchasing these - when it ramps up we are talking hair-dryer time here, real FX5900 stuff :eek:

I think it's also additionally annoying, because rather than being a single, constant noise, it's constantly ramping up and down.

Anyone considering one should also factor in the cost of an aftermarket fan if you value your hearing...

well im getting a 4870 and replacing the stock hsf with the accelero s1+120mm fan thats on my x1950 pro.

i always replace the stock cooler unless it already comes with a custom quiet one.

my sapphire is virtually silent, so much so I thought I'd gone deaf after replacing the 8800GT hairdryer.

Simple reason is the card is running too Hot !! at about 100c the fan kicks in 100% , There is Plenty of stuff on this forum about editing the CCC config file to get the fan speed up....Quiet and Cool is very achievable with the STD cooler

my sapphire is virtually silent
Mine too!

Wouldn't mind playing around with the fanspeed, any links on how to do it appreciated! :)

Everything still stock but card has run fine for 24 hours now, not sure how many rpms the fan is running at but its very quiet, can't wait for RivaTuner to be updated then I'm in business! :)

Open CCC and enable ATI Overdrive.

Click the Profile tab/Profile manager and create a profile (name it standard).
It will create a file called standard.xml in (users/name/appdata/local/ATI/ACE)

Now create another profile called Fanspeed. This will create another file called Fanspeed.xml in (users/name/appdata/local/ATI/ACE)

Open the Fanspeed.xml file in Notepad. The bit were interested in is as follows.

<Feature name="FanSpeedProtocol_0">
<Property name="FanSpeedProtocolProperty" value="Percent" />
</Feature>
<Feature name="FanSpeedAlgorithm_0">
<Property name="FanSpeedAlgorithm" value="Automatic" />
</Feature>
<Feature name="FanSpeedRPMTarget_0">
<Property name="Want" value="0" />
</Feature>
<Feature name="FanSpeedPercentTarget_0">
<Property name="Want" value="0" />

Change this line <Property name="FanSpeedAlgorithm" value="Automatic" />
to be
<Property name="FanSpeedAlgorithm" value="Manual" />

Now change this line to you desired value (something between 30 and 50) 35 works well for me on an overclocked Sapphire HD 4870.

<Feature name="FanSpeedPercentTarget_0">
<Property name="Want" value="0" />

and replace the zero here
<Property name="Want" value="0" />

to something between 30 and 50

I think the changes are in increments of 5, find one that has a good balance of cooling at heavy load and is still quiet. (example 35).

Now save your file and select the changed file in CCC/Profiles and activate it.

i cant believe people are leaving the stock heatsink on anyway, they are noisy and dont perform well anyway, take it off, save it (for if or when it fails)
get a decent cooler, preferably just the heatsink type and strap a quiet 120mm fan to it, make it fit if it doesn't , job done

Its silent at first and it also runs like the sun, I run it at 35% and it seems fine, 55 idle, cant afford a new cooler.
