Students: Weekly food spend

He's probably suprised how you manage to spend £50 a week on food, and whether it's completely necessary.

Fair enough, no its not necessary. I could get by spending £20 perfectly fine but I enjoy eating out/going to the pub for lunch etc with people..

I got away with £20 in my first year, though i ate crap most of the time. This year ive been making my own sauces and eating much more fruit and veg so now its nearer 30.

One thing to bear in mind is where you go. At York we have a Costcutter on campus which is convenient but VERY expensive. I now shop at coop because its closer to my house but if you go to somewhere like iceland or even Asda/tesco will be much cheaper.

Final thing, if you can buy in bulk. For instance I got 5kg of rice from Tesco at easter for £9 and it lasted almost all term (i often shared with my housemates). Much cheaper than buying small bags and satisfying too once you get to the end of the barrel!

Edit: I do recommend eating healthily if you can, ive lost half a stone this year, while drinking a lot more, simply by eating better and not having a pot noodle every (other) day!

When I was training I was eating a shed-load every day so £50 was about right. Meat is expensive and I was eating a lot of it.

However I managed to cut £10 just by shifting from Sainsburys to ASDA. Then when I was eating less it was averaging about £30.

Really cheap beef for instance is horrible though. Meat is one the things I would actually pay more for, other things you can skimp on.

About £50/week when i was eating properly 7 meals a day and going gym etc, I managed to get it down to about £35/week at the end of the last term though.

Ah ok, presumed we were talking about supermarket prices

Tesco metro in Jesmond, Newcastle (where I did most my shopping at uni) was supposed to be one of the most expensive tesco's in the north. I'm not sure how much truth there is in that, would have thought the prices were pretty standard between them. Guess I just don't pay that much attention hehe.

I would like to say £30, but realistically with the coffee drinking I do, its probably above £40.

The essentials shops are frightening. Things like big bags of pasta, rice, cereal, all the things which arn't bought often add up to a whopping ~£50.

So, in a nutshell, anywhere between £20-50, average £35.

Also, the smart student buys different things from different shops. Sumerfield always have a cheese on half price and normally have fairly decent prices for chicken.

When i was at uni it was something like £30 food and £30 bacci and booze. Baring in mind this was about 10 years ago (seems like yesterday still).
Then I had about £60 spare, which ran my car, and allowed the occasional night out.
I was getting just under £500 a month working at marks.

I didn't bother with a student loan, I just worked a fair bit and stayed at mates chipping in for bills or in my car when I occasionally couldn't get anywhere to stay.

rumour has it its the most expensive supermarket outside of london. id have to agree but then again i find every tesco rediculously expensive.

£30-40 week shopping at tesco.
£20-30 shopping at morrisons.
