Grid - 360 vs PS3

A friend of mine recently purchased a PS3, it's hooked up to a 50" LG Plasma TV with HDMI along with his 360.

We decided to compare a game that was available on both consoles so we downloaded the demo of Grid, both consoles were set up so the car was in the same place and we looked away whilst the HDMI input was changed so there was no chance of cheating.

The difference was startling, is there a valid reason why the PS3 version looked so colourless and the textures were not as sharp as the 360 version? I guess some people may argue they prefer the dumbed down colour palette of the PS3 version but we both preferred the vibrancy of the 360 version.

Most people won't notice this because they either own one or the other console and are unlikely to bother comparing the same game on each console.

I'm no expert but I doubt the colour difference is anything to do with the actual versions of the game, more likely the display settings for each console and how the TV handles the signal.

In the display settings, there's an option for full RGB, which from what I understand means the PS3 will output a signal with the full range of colour levels (0-255), whereas without it the signal is more limited. Not all TV's support full RGB, but pretty much all do these days.

there is no difference at all really on the consoles

noticed a few jaggies on my ps3 that were absent on the 360
smoke looks better on ps3 but it really is nothing major

i have the pc version of this game as that does look far superior

Sorry but you've been mislead there is absolutely no difference between Full and Limited, all Full does is remap the Limited spectrum to the 0-255 range for use on monitors and the like.

If you enable full on an unsupported TV you'll get black crush, if you enable Full on a supported TV it will look identical than if both were set at Limited.

As for the OP, it's probably the developer just being lazy it wouldn't be the first time would it?

Does the 360 not have a better GPU than the PS3?

It does, but RSX isn't intended to perform all the graphics so it doesn't need to be as powerful. There is a difference between inferior GPU and inferior graphics, you only have to look at games like Uncharted/MGS4/GT5P to see that if anything PS3 has superior graphics capabilities if the effort is put in, unfortunately for PS3 owners that's usually not the case with multiplatform games.

It should surely look better as DiRT is the one game that looked better on PS3 over Xbox360 when released and it's the same engine isn't it?

No, it's a newer version of the engine, heavily modified.

Race Driver: GRID uses Codemasters' own Ego engine, an evolved version of the Neon engine already used in their previous release Colin McRae DIRT.

I played both demo's and didn't really pick up on any differences.

Having said that, weren't a lack of colour and slightly blurrier textures always a complaint of PS3 cross-platform games? (earlier ones anyway)

The Grid games seem pretty similar from what I've seen. Brothers vs Friends lol, As I don't have the game. Obviously I've not compared side by side.

Could it be a case of 1 Demo being further along/more complete than the other?

I'm not making excuses, I just haven't noticed a difference THAT obvious.

What do you mean remap the limited spectrum? I'm pretty sure 360 games are rendered in 0-255, not sure about the PS3.

When I disable full RGB on my PS3 the image looks washed out and blacks look more like greys, similar to if I change the reference levels setting on my 360, so there must be a difference.

Full RGB on my previous panel looked like you say. However, full RGB on my new panel (which fully supports it) looks a million times better and not washed out in the slightest, which is the opposite to what you're saying.

Why should you have to fart around to get the best out of the PS3?

Chances are you arent getting the best out of the 360 either, Even if it does look better.

You should spend a little time fine tuning the screen for your console, Both PS3 and 360, It does make a difference
