Hi I'm quite new to the console scene but I'm getting tired of hooking my laptop up to my 32" LCD tv and I love gaming so I thought, why not get a Xbox 360? :D I have the following questions, maybe some of you can answer these:

- Can a Xbox 360 arcarde play xvid/divx (what about mkv?)
- Can it stream movies over the network? So if I share a directory full with movies on my PC, can it play those streamed over the network?
- Is it possible to save games with a xbox 360 arcarde which has no HD?
- It has a HDMI output, but no cable, can I just buy a HDMI cable off the bay and use that?
- Is the Xbox 360 a good media center or should I pass?

-xvid & divx yes, mkv no. Although you can use something like TVersity on the PC to stream it.
-yes, the directory is shared via Windows Media Player on the PC
-you need a memory card
-yes any HDMI is ok
-It does a cracking job for me ;)

- Supports xvid+divx but not mkv as far as I'm aware.
- Yes
- Yes, but you need a Xbox 360 memory card
- Yep
- Yes and no, I tried it wirelessley and it was very juddery watching video's. Wired it maybe a different scenario. I may have a slow wireless network too..

Hi RichieM, thanks for your reply, this helps me a lot :) Looks like I'm going to get a xbox 360 tonight :D

All your other questions are answered already. I seem to recall something about the xvid/divx (the new formats the 360 supports that it didn't originally) require you to be connected to Xbox Live and/or require a HDD for storage of the required codecs.

Not 100% certain on the HDD requirement (maybe using the memory card gets around this). Maybe someone else can shed some light?

I might be wrong but I think that update is if you wish to watch divx off the 360 hard drive. However, I couldn't see any info of it on xbox.com, but it did mention the AAC update
Don't have a hard drive? No problem—the AAC update fits easily on an Xbox 360 Memory Unit.

I'd imagine that stands for all updates

ive tried putting the download onto the memory card but couldnt get round this problem, so i now connect to live start film then disconnect from live straight after.

the downstairs xbox has a hdd and i dont have to do any of that malarky though if its on its connected to live ill try without live.

Watch Divx off the 360 hardrive? The only videos you can have on the drive are ones downloaded from the marketplace and they are in WMV.

As for needing to be on live to stream divx videos that was only because of DRM issues. So would only apply for people who have a replacement 360. That should be sorted now anyway with the DRM tool.

HTML Hugo it's because you downloaded the codec onto your downstairs 360 first. The DRM is tied to that console. When you play a video on your other 360 you need to be connected to live so live can verify that you own that codec. Lame I know.

Sorry to butt in however, I currently use TVersity to stream to 360 for DIVx files. Will the xbox now play these files directly or do i still need a program (such as i am using) to view them?

You can get rid of it and use WMP11 to stream files (background process)

Well I'm not a fan of Tversity as I find it a bit of a resource hog and hate that it's Java.

MWP11 was built with the feature and it all works well for me. No fuss.

Which should use less processor power?

in theory yes cos you wont have to use tversity to convert the vids to .wmv. now the 360 supports xvid and divx it should just be able to stream and play them without any transcoding

i think its just .mkv's that you'll still need to convert ont he fly with tversity

I have shared my drive with MWP11 and added the xbox to the allow sharing

however when i go to my vids and select my computer as source there are no files (the are all divx) just the folders

I am not certain, but I think that WMP11 sharing only works with content locally on that machine, not a shared drive to the PC.
