it all depends on the road markings which are obscured in that picture

whats the location, maybe google earth / multimap have a photo where they arent obscured ?

Either tell us what happened or get a better picture.

At a pretty simple guess;

Mate in car on left went onto the slip lane but cut across to the right hand lane of it (following red line) cutting up/hitting car which was in the right hand line on the roundabout deciding (rightly or wrongly unknown at this point) to join the slip road also.

The highway code used to say that unless otherwise directed, the left lane is left/straight on, and the right lane is right only... so if there where no signs, then I suppose you could say NO, he isn't allowed to go 'right'..

However, having 4 lanes to his 'right' I can see how 50:50 might be the easiest answer in an insurance claim...

My OcUK detective skills tell me that it is the Eastern Road Roundabout on the A2030 / A27 :D

Better detective than me :(

There are road signs

There are road markings a bit further back up the road off the screenshot shown in the OP, saying which lane exits to which road.

Hard to make out from the screenshot I have, but the OP should be able to clarify by checking the road markings!

/edit - from the screenshot I have, it appears that the OP's lane is marked for 'A27 West' which is obviously the exit heading west, that then slips on the the A27 a bit further to the left of the OP's pic. It appears that only the furthest right lane is marked for 'A27 & .....' and I can't make out the rest of it.

So it appears that BOTH lanes can go 'straight on' (A27 West) afaict - which means the OP's friend is definitely in the wrong.

However, its very hard to make out the road markings on the pic I have so would need the OP to confirm how the road is marked.

Search for 50.834016,-1.043438 on maps.google.co.uk. You can see the markings there. Looks like the left hand lane is for straight on...

[EDIT: per the screenshot just above!! Too slow...]

Is there a good host I can use that won't compress the image? If they compress it from what I've got it'll be impossible to make out, as even the original is a bit unclear - but good enough imo :)

If this is the same pic then the left hand lane is marked as straight on, the right hand lane marked straight and continue right.

ste if you go a bit further back up the road, it should be even clearer (but yeah, what you've drawn is how I interpret the road markings) - there is actually 'A78 west' marked on the road and then 'A78 & .......' for the furthest right lane

/edit - IamTeaf posted what I have :)

Actually the markings are confusing as if you look further back up the road both lanes are marked as turn to the right?
