There are no benchmarks for the 1Gb 4870 as of yet.

But that said, the 280 will still win out on performance. The extra 512mb of memory shouldn't have an effect on performance until the existing 512mb is full. This is unlikely to happen except at extremely high resolutions with AA enabled (at which point you would see graphics-RAM to system-RAM paging on the 512mb card but not on the 1Gb card).

The 280 is faster on average, any old benchmark will tell you that. But then, for £1 an 8600 GT would be a 'good' card, as price, for the vast majority of us, is a factor.

yeah the 280 will still edge it, i cant see the extra memory making any difference but i would like to be wrong.

btw, has anyone received one of these Leadtek extremes yet ?

Kind of odd that a brand name gtx is £305 and the ocuk oem varient is around £375 or so. :confused:

Yeah they probably haven't been adjusted. OcUK has always been great at securing good graphics card pricing for their own brands, they're probably looking for a brand that will allow them to rebrand theirs for sub-300£ pricing now, would be awesome.

The spec looks good to me. Should be a beast.

Others will tell you to go for the ATI 4870, and yes this is probably the better value card. Personally I went for a GTX280 because I want top-end power and I intensely dislike multi-GPU setups.

Yeah i was considering 4870 (i would need xfire to run 24" resolutions i imagine? because a single 4870 wouldn't really compliment 24" resolutions right?) but people tend to say single GPU is better at current .. i also want top-end power and the best card available atm to future proof my system .. i build a system every three years so i can afford to buy the best card available at the time.. thankyou for the comment

I'm not sure you would really need xfire to run at 24" resolutions (1920*1200) - at least not with todays games. Crysis aside, I find that my GTX280 is pretty much overkill for any of todays games, even at 1920*1200 with AA.

That said, if you're keeping the machine for 3 years without altering anything, it would pay to go for the fastest card you can. In particular, you should aim for 1Gb of memory (ie the upcoming 1Gb 4870, or a GTX280). More than 512mb is not really required at 1920*1200 at the moment, but I'm sure it will be within 3 years.

With all this said, video cards move on fairly quickly. I think you might get more performance in the long term by upgrading just the video card in 18 months or so. In which case a 4870 could well be sufficient.

If you can afford the extra, get the Antec 1200 over the 900.

Hi there

OK had a right barmy on the phone with Leadtek this morning and facts are the order has shipped from the far east today. Everything except the Extreme GTX 280's are expected to arrive this Friday as long as couriers do their job.

I have vented a lot of fustration at Leadtek as to how the hell does it take a week to package up goods and arrange shipping, sometimes I just can't stand laziness but as the deal is so good I can forgive them.

HI there

The major price drop has happened! NVIDIA and partners are mentioning a further $40 drop for GTX 280 and $20 drop on GTX 260 but are not confirming.

If this does happen it will mean current GTX 280 prices will drop circa £20 and GTX 260 pricing will drop £10, so its not that special but it all helps.
