Tell me about the Corolla AE86

Looking at the examle here of total costs to get a car imported to this country and through customs with everything paid (apart from MOT and road tax), my budget of around £4500 only gives me about ¥300,000 to play with :(

fairly dear that one. Will be at least 5.5k with all fees and taxes paid.

As a quick breakdown for anyone who wants to know, you will have to pay..
  • FOB price for the car (export sites usually list prices as FOB, if not then extra costs are about 50,000yen. This pays for de-registration, transport to docks, and organising ocean freight)
  • Ocean frieght, about 420gbp for a levin
  • import duty, 10% of car + ocean freight
  • VAT on top of everything so far
  • Handling fees (inc. customs clearance), MOT, reg. plates, about 200gbp

Nah, a car for 300,000 FOB will cost about 2600 when all said and done.

With a 4500 budget you should be able to afford a car for about 600,000 FOB.

So you reckon I could afford 600,000 FOB, UK customs etc, basically everything apart from UK registration, tax and MOT for ~£4500?

Are the prices on Tradecarview.com FOB?

yeah.

Take the 4500.

Minus a rather conservative sum of 150 for handling fees to your shipping agent (fwiw, Wainwright Bros are good) = 4350

Minus the VAT (/1.175) = 3702

Minus the Duty (/1.1) = 3365

Minus the shipping (-420) = 2945 left for the car (FOB), which = 618,256.14 JPY

Aye the thing is, that's fine with a Teg, they're good cars in standard form. AE86's are not.

Oh they are - it's just that by this sort of age they are tired and generally a bit worn out so they tend to be modified by now. Only thing I'd say is the suspension can be a touch soft as stock.

Well, I just had a look on the auctions at these for you (couldn't get on last night), and it seems the market value for these at auction is very much more reasonable than at dealers.

For example, this one sold for 183,000 (add on about 100,000 for fees when buying from auction).

FWIW, A1 means a minor scratch, B1 means a minor dent w/scratch, C means corrosion. This shows some corrosion on the o/s/r quarter, but tbh I can't even see it so it's likely to be an easy repair.

This isn't the only one, a few sold for under 200,000, the most expensive recently sold one is 363,000.

TBH, I've been looking on that tradecarview.com site and there are some awesome cars I can get for around 600,000 FOB. The AE86 is taking a back seat, there's other things that have caught my eye now ;)

is it a people carrier with a MAHOOOSIVE wing?

A year ago i would have laughed but my friend Saitrix loves um, possibly from talking to Lopez so have seen a lot more about them than i otherwise would which has changed my opinion of them. Seems they are going to be increadibly good fun to drive and i have been lead to believe its very easy to get the engine to rev past 10k. People should have a watch of a few vids from when the people of Best Motoring drive them, seems your better of with an AE86 than a Skyline. Also if you get a good one in panda-colours they do look pretty good as well (that is for those of you who don't just think omg its out of warranty it must be ugly!)

Just so you know, the cars on tradecarview are in general much more expensive than prices at auction. Send me a message on the email in my trust if you'd like me to get you details for viewing the major auctions. I'll warn you though, you may end up wasting a huge amount of time browsing on there :p

I'll send you an e-mail later tonight

How much would I need to add on to an auction price to get the car FOB?
