Argh, why do they do it - why do we do it?

Your walking down the corridor to the coffee machine and cross paths with Jim Bob and as you get to a certain point between you it goes something like this...

Me: You alright?

JB: Yea not bad thanks, you?

Me: Yea im ok thanks

...And you carry on your journey to the coffee machine.

Who actually stops, and goes....

Me: Hey, you alright?

JB: Well, not really no mate - My wife and I had an argument last night about who was going to make the dinner, I just found out my car is going to coat me £500 on repairs, im £1000 overdrawn and ive got a massive lump on my left testicle!

Me: *silence*

...Slowly walks on to the coffee machine.

I'm guilty of saying 'how do' or 'alright?' I should learn to be more formal around work

There is 'Alright' and then 'How are you doing?' or 'How's life?'.

If it's an 'Alright' then keep walking.

I say alright more than hi.

Actually with my accent and locale, I actually say 'now then'.

God knows where that came from!! :p

I hate people who say "how are you?" or similar in passing. If you don't want to hear anything than "fine" or "ok" then don't ask in the first place.

i dont like it and generally find i dont have time to ask back, and then feel rude for not doing so, i prefer to just say hi

If a shop assistant asks me if "I'm alright" I was usually always answer with some made up, personal problem regarding my bowel movement or personal issues at home.

Just irritates the hell out of me.

If I want to speak to a shop assistant, I will go and look for one. I don't want some gimp following me round and asking if I'm "alright", when really they actually mean, "can I help you"

Phew. Rant over.

There was a girl I used to know when I worked in Harrods who would actually tell you how she was if you asked. My fault for asking.

Oh hi, how are you?

Well I got up late this mornnig and I wasn't feeling good but that's because I'm on my period and it's worse than normal it hurts more so I went to Occupational Health to find out if anything was wrong and it took longer than I thought and then I was late and got told off by Julia but apart from that everything's OK I'm bored.

I tell them about my ****. Open up and others open up too. SOMEONE has got to brighten this damn place up :(

She sounds like eliott from scrubs.

If you stopped and chatted to every person you walk past you would get no work done and its rude to just ignore people.

I thought alright was just a northern thing?
