Anyone else have stuttering in COD4 with a 4850/4870 card?

An ATi 4870 getting 10FPS! Something has to be wrong, I just hope ocUK don't try and blame my PC. After all, this is on a fresh install like I say. Only installed drivers, game and windows updates.

Did you update Direct X ??

As I said earlier Installed updated Direct X (june 6th version) and all went nice and smooth again.
Just a thought.

Hi guys

Yup for DX I installed the lastest June 2008 redistributable. When the FPS dives there is no more or less hdd activity than normal. And it stays stuck at that speed until I exit out the game completely, which to me, if it was just a hickup it would maybes revert back in game. Not stay stuck constantly.

I have tried setting pagefile to a fixed size, different drive, but have opted for System Managed. None seem to fix this problem which leads me to believe it's down to the GPU. Nothing else.

Gurusan, I haven't tried monitoring the clockspeed or temps. Why would AA cause the clockspeed to throttle but no AA cause it to be ok? Is there a program I could perhaps use for this?

mmj_uk, I haven't tried a lower resolution because I would have thought a 4870 at 1920x1200 would work fine. I don't want to even consider dropping the res as that's why I bought a 24" monitor.

Thanks again!

Not sure but it sounds a bit like what my 8800GT did with CoD4. Running it at 1920x1200 with 4xAA on, the performance dropped severely, and the Chernobyl missions were ridiculously jerky. I turn off the AA and bingo ive got a smooth as hell 60 FPS. Have you tried the Chernobyl missions ?

Aye mate, I could hear the missile launch but couldn't move to watch it as it basically just stuck for like a minute and then kicked back into life. :(

no idea why it would be doing that, but GPU-Z will tell you.

I would think so too but you are running Vista 64 with only 2GB RAM which is not very much at all, it could theroetically be paging to HD because local and main memory is full.

Guys I don't think this is a paging or HD problem. I think it's directly related to the video card. Drivers or power supply....

I did have suttering but it seems to have stoped now. Strange enough it was after I turned windows update off then the stuttering stopped. Probably a coincidence though

Well that's why I asked if he'd tried with the FSAA and resolution turned down, to rule it out or not.

Even 32bit Vista is going to struggle with only 2GB RAM and 64bit OS's/programs generally consume a considerable amount more memory.

well AA would be more work load on the card so it could possibly be overheating and causing the card to lower its clock speed...so it is best to try and monitor the temps if possible.
normally that can be done with riva tuner but i dont think it supports the 48xx series cards yet.

COD4 has a known issue with the "in game" Vsync option.

Also, have you just tried running it without Vsync on the card? Maybe that is what is causing your issues?

Matthew

I have seen similar stuttering with my 4870 on TF2 when I apply 4xAA or 8xAA, but tbh it seems more akin to the famous source sound stutter bug more than anything else. (it only happens when you first begin to play a map, as if it's filling up the VRAM, and then doesn't occur again until you switch to a new map). It's worth noting that this did not occur on the same PC config when I had my 8800GTX installed. I have also seen quite lengthy pauses when running the crysis benchmark (benchmark_gpu) when applying 4xAA on 1920x1200 resolution

I presume you are running vsync with COD4 ? Whilst it should not occur due to the power of the 4870 have you tried to rule out that it's not an issue related to the 60/30/15 fps double buffering caused by vsync ? It's worth trying to force triple buffering with something like D3Doverrider or DXTweaker and to force the extra back buffer.

I have done some testing with COD4 on mine and not got any paused, but this was MP only! I will try this over the weekend and try and report back to you.

Anyone got any news when Rivatuner will support the ATI 4000 series ?
It would prove invaluable here for the OP to be able to check how much VRAM is being used, GPU temps etc...
