80Gb PS3 out Aug 27 th in UK (not BC)

Or look at it this way, Sony want people to keep buying PS2 titles as well as the PS2 hardware which is still making them a decent profit. I'm pretty sure the PS2 sold out at Xmas.

It would be very unlikely. The people buying a ps2 aren't those with the money avalible to buy a ps3. The people who want bc already have a ps2 and want to get rid of it.

I should have bought a 60gb PS3 when it came out but before i decided i wanted it, it was to late and it was sold out.

Since then i thought they would release an 80Gb with BC, as this is not the case, im going to buy a 40gb and just whack in a new hard drive.

Very annoyed by this announcement.

Sorry to go off topic but .....

What are PS3 60 gigs going for second hand in mint condition with DS3 and 6 games & hdmi cable ? :D

To be honest, they want PS2 hardware to keep selling, and they also want PS3s to sell? I know so many people who won't buy a PS3 because it doesn't have BC, it's like £90 PS2 or £300 PS3 - which does Sony want to sell more?

Idiots.

Whats the deal with the hard drives on the PS3? I mean, why do you need them? Do the games install to the hard drives and not play from the disks?

all the people saying they should have bought a 60gb lol. and to think ive never played a ps2 game on mine :p

tbh i think id rather buy a ps2, compatibility on the 60gb from what ive read isnt all that hot, though most games 'work'. a new one wouldnt cost all that much and its so small it would go almost anywhere. and obviously be more compatible.

I really don't see the point in having bigger hard drives. Why would you want your console to act as a pc in terms of media storage?

It's Sonys idea of a "home entertainment system", unfortunatley it's a case of jack of all trades, master of none here.

Well if you want the console in your living room then you could store all your media on there if you aren't keen on streaming/don't have your pc on all the time.

I got myself a ps2 the other day for said reason my 60 gig does not like gt4 i have a small flicker in the top left of the screen,so went and buyed a ps2 slim line for 25 quid so i can play some old titles.
Trouble is the ps2 looks kinda awful on my samsung 32 :( so i use a commodore amiga monitor for the job small but nice picture.

Why not?

Surely they must be cheaper to manufacture and with the removal of features they must be saving even more money.

Surely you mean they are losing less by doing this - PS3 per unit hasnt made it into profit yet!!!

Dont see any issue for complaint to be fair - the older customers havent really lost anything (as most who need more than 40Gb would buy a substantially bigger hdd than 80GB anyway) and the newer customers arent paying any more for a product that has been improved (albeit marginally) - compared to what was available immediately before, ie the 40GB.

Idiots.

Not really as very few are actually interested in BC anyway - and there is still liklihood for those who are interested there will be a full download at some point in the future

Yes, there is free program called PCSX2 which allows you to play ps2 games on the pc (legally).
Not entirely true as it would have to contain Sony IP of one sort or another to work at all - and Im sure Sony havent given it to them

Which pretty much everyone was willing to pay the extra £5 for the EE.

hmmm how do you know it only cost them £5 to put that in, personally think thats a complete guess

Will the new ps3 at least come with the basics like a hdmi cable?

You mean like all of MS's sku's - NOT!!!

Not everyone has a tv with hdmi, so why bundle something that could well just be thrown away

While I personally have thrown away every packaged s-video cable ever bundled with Xbox, x360, ps2 &3 etc etc at least everyone is guarenteed to have this on their tv

+1

Well actually I played GT4 for about an hour when I first got it and havent picked it up since hahahaha

Sounds like you just prefer the other option - but if you actually give the PS3 time its a damn good media player/streamer

Would be tempted by a PS3 if had BC only because I want to play gods of war 1 and 2 but then again I could get all that by buying a ps2 for £50 and getting the games cheap second hand.

I used to love Ps1 and Ps2 but for me Sony have lost the edge with Ps3.

Only the bios, which you can legally extract from a ps2. The emulator is perfectly legal just like all the others, hence why the website hasn't been shut down.

It was the figure given by sony.

Your right, hardly anyone buying a £300 PS3 has got a hdtv..... or not. The number of wasted composite cables must be massive, contributing further to sonys damage to the environment.

The 360 comes with a hd cable, the ps3 could at least come with component if not hdmi, it's a hd console and selling it without a hd cable just screams of cheapness. Every tv in the EU has scart and s-video in the USA, but instead they bundle the worst, cheapest video cable, composite.

All these cost cuttings are what is making me wait longer to buy a ps3, I'm certainly not alone in waiting for the price to come down after so much stuff being cut out and having to buy extras for the console like a hdmi cable.

i own a 60gb and can honestly say that i have played 3 ps2 games and that is it

i brought my next gen console to play next gen games

BC is a waste of time
and to be honest i wish i had got the 40gb version

I'm not even bothered about BC tbh, what's the point when you bought your next gen console for next gen games. I have my PS1 and PS2 if I want to play old games.
